JAN 10: Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has directed principal secretary of the Urban Development department to examine the allegations made by Shiv Sena MLA Gajanan Babar that there have been serious financial irregularities in various works of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

In a letter sent to Babar, Deshmukh has informed Babar that principal secretary of the Urban Development department will look into the issues raised by him and that he would be duly informed about the outcome.

Raising various issues of financial irregularities in a letter sent to the Chief Minister, in October last year, Babar had made a demand that the State Government should conduct a special audit of all the expenditure on various civic works completed during the last 25 years. Babar had demanded that the State Government conduct a special inquiry into all the civic works and other administrative expenses during the year 2000.

Babar cited that no tenders were called for the purchase of pipelines of Rs 68 crore last year. The PCMC completed the work of asphaltation of the Mumbai-Pune stretch for no reason but for the benefit of the contractors. He charged that the road works in the rural areas were of very poor quality. He alleged that in the appointment of nurses, ward boys and surveyors, money in large amounts exchanged hands. There has also been corruption in the purchases of new buses of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Transport, he alleged.
