PUNE, June 2: On Tuesday the Film and Television Institute of India stands in its place. Yet, the Prabhat Studio continues to live in the 22 acre campus, peeping out of various nooks and corners to tell the story of its pioneering contribution to the history of Indian cinema. It is that very story that a new website, launched on Tuesday by actor Sachin tries to tell.

The website is the result of the combined efforts of the descendants of V G Damle, one of the six founders of the Prabhat Studio. A brainchild of Dada Damle, the eldest son of V G Damle, the site tries to capture the pioneering work that the studio achieved way back in the 1930s.

8220;I wanted the new generation to know the story of what Prabhat was all about. In many ways it is the history of Indian cinema itself. And with the website I want to renew interest in Marathi cinema,8221; says Dada.

So after 70 years, as the tutari of the Prabhat Studio blows once again as the website unfolds a new era. An era that has its roots firmly ensconced in the past.

Divided into six sections, the site tells the history and some of the most memorable scenes from the studio8217;s Marathi and Hindi productions. A unique feature of the site is the inclusion of a soundtrack from Sant Tukaram.

Greats such as Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar are listed alongwith other films. Rare pictures that show some of the special effects from the films are also included. Other delights include a section on Dharmatama that has songs by the great Balgandhrva.

8220;Imagine in those days a scene from Sant Tukaram where Garud is seen flying,8221; says Neha Damle, the person responsible for the actual work on the net with her husband Sunil, 8220;In 1936 this was path breaking for Indian cinema.8221;

Chips in her husband, 8220;Take the scene from Shejari where a dam bursts devastating the population. These were all achieved by Prabhat in the 1930s.8221; Sunil, the grandson of V G Damle, along with two web page designers, Girish Satarkar and Harshal Raje conceptualised the site.

For Dada Damle this is a journey back in time. 8220;In those days the studio focussed on mythological films because they were so familiar and easy to understand.8221; The excitement begun when Shantaram started socially relevant films. Recollects Dada, 8220;There was Kunku that vehemently opposed the practice of marrying young girls to old widowers. The success of the film meant that the message had gone down well with the audience. Even Shejari tells the story of two friends, a Hindu and a Muslim. Each was a wonderful effort that introduced Indian cinema to the world.8221;

Films like Sairandhri which was the first colour film used reflected light and issued gramaphone records for the first time. 8220;The records were pressed in Germany,8221; points out Sunil.

The site also focuses on the origin of the studio when on June 1, 1929, V G Damle and his friends the legendary V Shantaram among them from the Maharashtra Film Company got together to tell stories through moving pictures.

With the advent of new technology, Dada also wants it to become a platform for film enthusiasts. Therefore, in comes information about literature and video cassettes on rare films that are available in the market. 8220;I want people to participate in this process, so that Marathi cinema and its culture grows,8221; says Dada. Beyond the barriers of time that will be overcome with a website on the super info highway. The site is prabhatfilms.com.
