This refers to the editorial 8216;The second Mrs G8217; IE, November 22. The nationalisation of banks in 1969 was undertaken through the garibi hatao policy of Indira Gandhi, which is not the answer to the current global economic crisis. The statement made by Sonia Gandhi was aimed at voters, with the ongoing assembly and coming general elections in mind, and is best ignored.

A matter of trust

High voter turnout despite inclement weather and violence showed that the people of Kashmir have faith in the Indian democratic process. Despite calls for a boycott by the separatists, international observers lauded the elections, which should remind separatists of their diminishing role as representatives of Kashmiris. The elected government is the constitutional and popular representative of Kashmiris and must be recognised so by one and all.

Reticence needed

This refers to 8216;Purohit to CBI8221;. It is unfortunate for the state when political parties negate human values and propagate the idea of retaliatory violence. If senior politicians publicly doubt the investigative agencies, during the probe, we can8217;t hope for communal harmony. For momentary electoral gains, our leaders shouldn8217;t jeopardise the credibility of the state. Let us not politicise crimes against humanity.

An exception?

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad8217;s political stunts could be seen through his balancing acts in relation to the Congress.

Conversely, Rahul Gandhi cannot be ignored and stamped as merely a political game player as has been done by Mayawati and Rajnath Singh. He seems to be saying and doing what the country needs, and what other political leaders never do.

Tarunabh Khaitan8217;s 8216;The body in pain8217; was timely and educative. What is India8217;s stand on torture? We know torture is internationally recognised as a crime against humanity, is illegal, and yet occurs with impunity. The social and political elite support it because the sufferers are usually the poor or belong to disadvantaged communities. We have not ratified the Convention Against

Torture, although we8217;ve signed it. It8217;s time we took the rights of our citizens seriously.

MS could stand for 8220;Master Strategist8221; and M.S. Dhoni is not only a great player but a very intelligent captain. Modern cricket is a game planned out in the mind and the dressing room. It is only executed on the field. Dhoni certainly has the brains to beat the best. The World Cup may be a long way off still but the nucleus of the team we need then is in the right gloves.
