Decision
PATIALA:
The Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) Driver Operators’ Union has decided to observe work-to-rule from June 29. According to general secretary Jaspal Singh Aujla, the union has deferred its earlier decision to observe work-to-rule from June 8 because of the assurance of the board management to sort out the problems in an early meeting. Later, the management had backtracked from its commitment.

Boycott
SANGRUR:
Three gram panchayats, including Jatiwal and Wazidgarh Raune in Malerkotla sub-division and Mandal in Barnala sub-division will boycott the panchayat elections scheduled for June 21. They are sore that the state government has declared them reserved either for the Scheduled Castes or for the women. The Mandal village has only three houses of the Scheduled Castes, while Jatiwal (Reserve) has only one Scheduled Caste house. Wazidgarh Raune village was reserved for the women where three women filed nomination but later withdrew their papers. No nomination paper was filed for the Mandal gram panchayat, while all nominations filed for Wazidgarh Raune have been withdrawn.

Crime
SANGRUR:
District Returning Officer for panchayat election G.R. Bansal has ordered the registration of a criminal case against Block Development and Panchayat Officer Moonak Joginder Pal and panchayat officer Hira Lal under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) 467 (forgery of valuable security) and 568 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) of the IPC. Bansal told ENS that the BDPO mysteriously misplaced the nomination papers of a candidate for the sarpanch of village Bhatuan under Moonak subdivision. The BDPO had also appointed Hira Lal as the returning officer there flouting rules.

BATALA:
The local police have arrested a suspected robber, Ravi Kumar of Tellianwal village. Another robber of the same gang Rakesh Kumar, also resident of the same village, had been arrested earlier. SSP Lok Nath Angra said Ravi Kumar was intercepted during naka at Hathi Gate in the town on a scooter on Monday night. A country-made pistol of .303 bore along with two live cartridges, besides a scooter which he and his accomplices had snatched from Dharmpura colony of the town, were recovered from him.

Protest
AMRITSAR:
The Congress and the CPI have censured BJP-SAD government for booking Congress and other non-BJP-SAD sarpanches and panches in false cases. Speaking at a protest demonstration held by Congress and CPI workers in front of the BDO office, a member of Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee, Raj Kumar said that nomination papers of more than 600 CPI and Congress sarpanches and panches have been cancelled under the pressure of ruling party MLAs and ministers whereas not a single nomination paper of SAD candidate has been cancelled.

Mishap
BATALA:
A doctor was killed in a road accident near Ghasitpura village, near here today. According to the police, Vinod Kumar, a resident of Dhariwal town was going to his native place from Amrtisar in a Maruti car when a tempo hit the car. He was admitted in Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Hosptial, Amritsar, where he succumbed to his injuries. The police have registered a case but no arrest has been made so far.

SHIMLA:
The Government Assurances Committee of Kerala Legislative Assembly, Thiruvananthapuram, under the chairmanship of P.K. Kumarasn, called on Himachal Pradesh Speaker Gulab Singh Thakur, here today. During the course of discussion, views on a variety of subjects of mutual interest like the functioning of house and its committees were exchanged followed by the discussion on developmental activities in the hilly terrains in respect of horticulture and agriculture. The committee is on a study tour of Shimla.

SHIMLA:
Airtel, India’s premier and Himachal Pradesh’s first cellular service, has announced the launch of its services in Kullu and Manali. With the setting up of separate Bharti Telenet Service soon at Kufri, the services will be extended much beyond Kufri. In Kullu region, Airtel’s network will cover Bhuntar, Kullu town, Katrain, Patli Khul, Naggar, Kullu-Manali highway (right bank) and the surrounding areas.

Restrictions
SHIMLA:
The Himachal Pradesh government today reintroduced restrictions on the entry of visitors to the Civil Secretariat which will be open for them from 1400 hours to 1630 hours. According to a government spokesman here, the Secretariat had been witnessing unprecedented rush of visitors, coming to congratulate the Chief Minister and other ministers for their victory in the recent elections, during the past few days. The Chief Minister has thanked the people for such a massive support.
