NEW DELHI, June 2: In a bizarre incident, the crematorium authorities at Dayanand Ghat in Nizamuddin today issued a crematorium certificate even before the deceased8217;s body was brought there.

Sardari Lal Dhawan 78 a private medical practitoner died after a cardiac arrest at GB Pant hospital last evening. While his body was brought to the crematorium at 11 am, his son came to the crematorium early in the morning and took the certificate. The certificate, which is used to procure the death certificate from the Registrar, death and birth, cannot be issued before the last rites are performed.

A property dispute in the family, is believed to have caused this.Dhawan was brought to the crematorium at 11 am by his daughter Urmil Rawal and some other relatives. To their surprise, they found that not only had the entry for the body been made into the register but even the provisional death certificate been issued by the crematorium. Taken aback, his daughter later lodged a complaint with the Nizamuddin Police Station.

According to Rawal, 8220;When we found that all the formalities had been completed, we inquired and found that the certificate was issued to my brother Surinder who had been disowned by my father four years back.8221;

Even the receipt for the wood required for the pyre had been issued, she added.According to Urmil, this negligence on the part of the crematorium authorities could put her in a tight spot. 8220;As per the will of my father Surinder can not claim the property but now he may move the court with the certificate claiming that he performed the last rites,8221; said Urmil, claiming that her son had performed the last rites.

Tilak Ram, a priest at the crematorium, said that a couple had come to the crematorium at 9:30 am and asked them to make entry for the body of their father they wanted to cremate. 8220;They informed us that the body was being brought by other relatives. He insisted that we issue the certificate and paid the money for the necessary arrangements8221;, he claimed.

Tilak said that after verifying the name and address of the man and the woman and also the death in their family the certificate was issued to the man. 8220;We called up Surinder8217;s home and confirmed that there had indeed been a death in the family and after ascertaining that he was the deceased8217;s son, we issued the certificate,8221; he said. He, however, agreed that certificates are always issued after the performance of the last rites.

Surinder, who is also a private medical practitioner, claimed that being the legal heir, he performed the last rites of his father, and collected his death certificate. He said,8220;I was never written off by my father and there is no such will. The disputed property is in the name of my grandmother.8221; Meanwhile, the local police confirmed that they had indeed received a complaint to this effect. They said that a fresh entry was made in the register and another certificate was issued to the daughter of the deceased. Preliminary inquiries have revealed that there is a property dispute and further investigations are on.
