In the second instance of a metro project construction site being flagged for skirting air pollution norms, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) gave a closure notice to the ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant at the Mandale Car Depot, Mankhurd. The notice was given to the contractor NCC Ltd, which has been appointed to construct a Metro Bhavan, an operations and control center for all the Metro lines, by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

The notice was given within the last few days, said a spokesperson for the MPCB, which have started an intensive inspection in RMC plants across the city flouting pollution norms. Closure reports have been given to four RMC plants, while action has been taken against 37, resulting in fines collected of Rs 1.87 crore. Four investigation teams have been formed in Mumbai and two in Navi Mumbai to monitor the plants.
While specific details against the violations and action taken against the metro works RMC plant were not available, a spokesperson for MPCB said the norms include inadequate tire washing, covering of the construction site, among others. Questions to the MMRDA went unanswered. Another of the RMC plants that has been given a closure notice is one working on the BMC’s Deonar waste to energy plant, operated by M/s Ramky Infrastructure Ltd.
The other two plants to which cosure notices were given are M/s Om Gahlot in Deonar and M/s N A Construction Pvt Ltd in Mandale and Turbhe village.
