Apropos of your editorial ‘End this witch-hunt’ (IE, May 14), such a vindictive approach will not take this country far. Is the CBI the panacea for all our problems, is it so infallible? Does it consist of individuals whose conduct can be said to be completely above board? Are we assured of an unbiased investigation?

Bad faith

This refers to reports of protests against the Sunny Deol starrer Jo Bole So Nihal (IE, May 14). It is strange we should be so offended even by a title of a film connected with religion, but are not bothered at all about the violation of its teachings which are its essence. Sikhism is against casteism. Yet like in any other community, casteism is practised among Sikhs also. But we are yet to hear about public protests or demonstrations by the community’s political and religious leaders against this bad practice.

Dismal silence

RJD supporters and MPs were found to be travelling without tickets. They were rightly asked to pay a fine according to the rules in force. Instead of being appreciated for his upright lawfulness, surprisingly, the officer, ADRM of Allahabad, was issued a suspension order which was finally revoked because of protests from employees. This incident, disappointingly, did not evoke protests from political parties nor any condemnation from newspapers.

A security issue

This refers to the way in which Union Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee was physically roughed up in Calcutta by Congress ticket aspirants for the municipal elections. It was shameful to see the way they behaved. It also raises serious questions about security. Crores of tax-payer rupees are being spent annually to pay for security arrangements for these VIPs and VVIPs and yet a bunch of rowdy party workers in Calcutta managed to physically rough up the Union defence minister.

No, minister

Apropos of ‘PM shoots down Laloo’s bullet trains, says first get basics right’ (IE, May 14), bullet trains in India are not feasible right now. Our railway system still does not have the capacity to run them. Many accidents are experienced in a year though the speed levels may not be too high at present. Laloo Yadav should first think of the safety measures and the need to urgently implement them before spending a huge amount of public money in vain.

Come and talk

This refers to your editorial ‘Absent, sir’ (IE, May 2). The NDA should accept the verdict of the people of the country. Its leaders should raise and debate public issues in Parliament on the floor of the House instead of boycotting Parliament or its committees.
