Soon after his release from Patiala Central Jail today, SAD chief and former CM Parkash Singh Badal said that the days of Amarinder Singh8217;s government8217;s were numbered as it was being run by a coterie of officials surrounding Amarinder.
Attacking the Congress government, Badal said that apart from Congress MLAs even the people were unhappy with Amarinder8217;s style of functioning. About 40 legislators were voicing their dissent against the Captain, he said, adding that the time was apt for Amarinder to quit as CM in view of the mounting dissidence in the Congress Legislature Party and lack of public confidence.
Badal alleged that Amarinder had acted against him and his son Sukhbir out of political vendetta. Even before coming to power, Badal recalled, Amarinder had said he would treat him Badal such that 8216;8216;naani yaad aaju8217;8217;. Badal alleged that kickbacks could have played a role in the decision to sell Punjab Tractors Ltd to a private party, while charging that most actions of the present regime smack of corruption.
Recalling his 10-days in jail, Badal said he had not demanded any special facilities. However, he lamented that Sukhbir was lodged in a condemned cell for three to four days, which involved solitary confinement.
Badal also thanked the BJP, the NDA leadership and the rank and file of his own party, for standing by him. He said he was reminded of the days when he was released from prison after the Emergency was lifted. He said he would go to Amritsar tomorrow to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple.
Later, Badal spoke to party workers in Gurdwara Dukhnivaran. SGPC chief G.S. Tohra called upon the people of Punjab to ensure a Congress rout in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections and asked his partymen to mobilise masses against the Congress.
