Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad on Monday said that the Congress corporators from Mumbai will be going to divisional commissioner's office on Tuesday to get registered as a group.
Amid the ongoing uncertainty over the mayoral candidates in all 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, the lottery for the reservation of the post will be held on January 22.
The Urban Development Department (UDD) of Maharashtra government on Monday released the programme for the lottery process, which will be held in Mantralaya. The lottery will decide the reservation for the mayoral post for all municipal corportaions. It will decide whether the post is open or reserved for women, OBC, Scheduled caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST).
Following the announcement of reservation for the mayoral post, the municipal commissioner will call for the house to be convened where the mayor’s election will take place, if needed. The candidate with highest votes will be declared winner.
According to sources within the UDD, the gazette confirming the results of the municipal corporations will be published by Monday evening.
Following its publication, the political parties from cities which are likely to see close contest for the mayoral post will take its corporators to the district collector or divisional commissioner’s office for the registration of the group within the civic body.
“Once registered as a group, the corporators will have to follow the whip issued by the group leader. It stops them from changing sides at the time of mayoral election. For any split in future, it will have to approved by at least two third of the corporators,” said an official from the UDD.
Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad on Monday said that the Congress corporators from Mumbai will be going to divisional commissioner’s office on Tuesday to get registered as a group. Similarly other parties too will be doing the same.
According to Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC), the body’s work is over after the conduct of elections and results are declared. “We don’t look after the conduct of mayoral polls. It is the urban development department which takes care of it,” said an official from the SEC.
