With an eye on Lok Sabha polls, the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir today took out demonstrations against the ruling Peoples Democratic Party for its 8216;8216;failure8217;8217; to pass a controversial women8217;s Bill.
Denouncing the PDP for 8216;8216;succumbing to pressure from the BJP-led NDA government and Opposition Congress8217;8217; for not passing the Permanent Resident Disqualification Bill, NC activists marched from party headquarters at Nawa-i-Subuh to Lal Chowk.
About 300 activists led by Kashmir provincial president Mehboob Baig were stopped by police at Regal Chowk and persuaded to disperse, sources said.
Baig, who addressed activists before returning to the party office, assured NC support to the ruling party in passing the Bill. 8216;8216;We are ready to extend our support to the PDP for ensuring smooth passage of the Bill in the Upper House provided the ruling party show seriousness and convenes the legislature early,8217;8217; Baig said. He said NC had all along been protecting and safeguarding Article 370 which guarantees special status to the state and would foil any attempt to undermine the separate identity of the state. The leader asked what 8216;8216;concession8217;8217; was the Centre going to grant to separatists when it opposed passage of a 8216;8216;genuine piece of legislation8217;8217;.
