AHMEDABAD, Oct 4: Countdown to the 13th Lok Sabha election results has begun and exit polls, predictions and past records notwithstanding, no one yet knows which way the winds will blow. Till then each candidate is a winner. At least till Wednesday afternoon when the first results are expected to start pouring in.

“It is a winning seat, so there is no excitement,” said BJP contestant for Ahmedabad seat Harin Pathak, adding the party had been winning it since the past four elections. “Preparations for the victory procession are underway, the question is only of lead gained,” he said.

Cricketing metaphor best describes Congress contender Girish Dani’s situation as he himself says, “This is a bouncer wicket, and the BJP has won four times. But I am ready for a bouncer and expect to hit a six”. However, he adds as an afterthought, “But even otherwise I won’t be injured, and I have nothing to lose”.

The Gandhinagar constituency, however, is quite another ball game. With contestants like L K Advani of BJP and former chief election commissioner T N Seshan of Congress, the entire nation’s eyes are on this key constituency. Both star candidates are expected to be at the counting centre on October 6, sources said. Kapadwanj is another seat generating considerable interest owing to Congress candidate Shankersinh Vaghela. “Congress will win more seats than the BJP in Gujarat and NBA will not have a clear majority at the Centre,” Vaghela concluded without preamble. Asked if he the impending results are giving him tense moments, the former chief minister said, “I am never nervous, I am going to win, and be in Himmatnagar by Wednesday evening”.

In Surat, Kashiram Rana too is confident of a victory. “I am expecting a lead of two lakh votes,” he said, adding the party was sure about the Mandvi seat too. “South Gujarat will be ours,” he said triumphantly. Congress has fielded Rupin Pachigar, former president of South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a businessman.

Vadodara constituency became controversial when former Congress MP Satyajit Gaekwad was replaced by Urmilaben Patel to contest against BJP’s Jayaben Thakkar. Now former chief minister Chimanbhai Patel’s wife is confident of a win. “This would not be my life’s first victory,” she said. “So there is no question of being nervous, victory is almost decided.” Another woman candidate, also a former chief minister’s wife is equally confident about victory. “There is no tension and I am going to win the seat no doubt,” said Nishaben Chaudhary, Congress contestant in Sabarkantha parliamentary constituency. Her husband and leader of Opposition in the Assembly Amarsinh Chaudhary echoes her sentiment. “There is jubilation in the house already,” he said.
