Less than two weeks after failing in their bid to oust President Bill Clinton, Republicans after a White House meeting pledged to work with Clinton across party lines 8220;to do what the American people expect. We8217;re going to work together, hopefully across party lines in the Congress, and with the administration to do what the American people expect of us,8221; said Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott after meeting with Clinton.

Just two weeks ago, Lott had been leading a Republican call for Clinton8217;s ouster during a bitter impeachment trial that split the nation8217;s leadership down party lines. 8220;When asked if he now trusted the President, Lott said: 8220;The real issue is will we work together to get our job done?8221;8217;8220;We are starting to work to put together ideas. That8217;s the first step,8221; Lott said, echoing Clinton8217;s earlier calls to improve education and safeguard the future of social security. 8220;We need to put the ideas so we can frame the debate so that we can move forward for what the agenda is for the Americanpeople,8221; Lott said.
