MUMBAI, February 27: The budget session of the State Assembly which witness hot debates on controversial issues like the Rent Control Act and the Srikrishna Commission report, will commence on March 16, 1998.

Governor P C Alexander has summoned a meeting of the State Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council at 1 pm at Vidhan Bhavan on that day. The budget session will last for five weeks.

The Supreme Court has directed the state government to enact the Rent Control Act on or before March 31, 1998, and has also issued directives to amend the Act in its judgement dated December 19, 1997. The government has prepared a new comprehensive bill to this effect which will be passed in the session. Chief Minister Manohar Joshi and his deputy Gopinath Munde, have announced that the Srikrishna Commission report will be tabled in the House during the session.
