
Ward by-polls: nominations filed
By-elections to two wards in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC, scheduled for November 29, promise to be a muti-cornered contest. On the last day of filing of nominations, 25 people filed for ward number 46 Kane Nagar-Ravli Tekdi and 10 people for ward number 52 Hararwala Jupiter Mill. Both the wards have been lying vacant since the death of their corporators: Sohansingh Kohali from ward number 46 who died in January this year and Kedari Redekar, who was shot in March this year. In each of the wards, two former corporators will try their luck: former Congress corporator Rustom Tirandaz as an Independent at Ravli Tekdi and former Janata Dal leader in the corporation, Vivek Khadye, from Jupiter Mill. Khadye, who is presently holding the post of the Mumbai district JD president, will contest on behalf of the party. He had lost the last elections to Redekar by over 1,500 votes. This time round, there are more than one candidate for the same party. In RavliTekdi, there are two candidates each from the Congress and the Republic Party of , while at Jupiter Mill, there are two Congress candidates. The other prominent candidates in the fray from ward number 46 are Laxminarayan Bhatia from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Jasbirsingh Bhira and Maniktala Singh from the Congress, Sunder Narayan from the Samajwadi Party, Sudan Mulraj from the Samata Party, Bhimraj Rankhambe and Chandrakant Kasbe from the RPI. There are 16 Independent candidates.
From ward number 52, the candidates are Desai Babanrao and Anant Bhosale from the Congress, Prabhakar shelar from the Shiv Sena and Khadye from the JD. There are six Independents.
The last day for withdrawl of nominations is November 9.
Ulhasnagar burning case: PSI suspended
Police Sub Inspector D C Wagh of the Central Police station, Ulhasnagar, was suspended for dereliction of duty in Keswani couple burning case. Pinki Dusheja and her husband Kamlesh Keswani were set ablaze by Pinky8217;s family members on October 28.Keswani later succumbed to burns. A day before the incident, the Dusheja family had threatened to kill the Keswanis and the police had summoned the families to the station. 8220;In spite of specific orders by API Shelar that both the parties should be detained in the station till they reached a compromise, Wagh let them off,8221; said Thane Commissioner of Police Bhujangrao Mohite. Just half an hour later, the Keswani couple was set on fire.
Cowshed owner held, arms seized
The police arrested a cowshed owner and recovered a large cache of arms at Shivaji Park this morning. According to the police, the accused Rajesh Mangal Singh was arrested. Five revolvers and 20 live cartridges were seized. A case under the Arms Act has been lodged against Singh, the police added. Investigations have revealed that Singh had earlier been questioned for possessing illegal arms after the serial bomb blasts that rocked the city in 1993.
The police said Singh owns a cowshed at Golibar, Santacruz east. Incidentally,Golibar was rocked by a series of blasts on February 27 this year which left two dead and four injured.
IBM aid to train youths in IT
US computer giant IBM has launched a centre to promote education in information technology for youth from economically backward class in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Addressing presspersons recently, IBM8217;s Director Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Mike H Colleary said, 8220;The centre, to be managed by the Bhavan, will train 50 students per batch for three months. Twelve such batches will run concurrently, enabling 2,400 students to be trained annually.8221;
The total cost of the project is around Rs 1.4 crore. The US giant will also give Rs 25 lakh per annum to the centre to meet training and maintenance costs.
The vice-chairperson of the Gandhi Institute of Computer Education amp; Information Technology, Murli Deora MP stated that the centre8217;s aim is to set up at least 50 free computer education centres all over India by the year the 2000 to train 50,000students annually.
