MUMBAI: The $9 bn global advisory firm KPMG International on Friday announced setting up a focussed IT centre in India as a common resource pool for its global network.Inaugurating the centre here today, Colin Sharman, chairman KPMG International, said: "In India there already exists an abundance of talented and highly qualified professional manpower. And that is what we feel is going to power the country’s global competitiveness."

Bangur died

CALCUTTA: Noted industrialist and philanthropist Narsing Dass Bangur died today at his residence here, family sources said. Bangur, the architect of Bangur industrial organisation, was the chairman of several companies like Graphite India, West Coast Paper Mills and Shree Synthetics.He was also on the board of Bangur Brothers Limited, Bank of Baroda and Phillips Carbon Black, besides being a committee member of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Calcutta Stock Exchange.

Silver prices rise

MUMBAI: Silver prices rose further on thebullion market here Saturday on good festive buying coupled with higher overseas advices. However, gold held steady on restricted demand.Ready silver .999 fineness and tenderable silver rose further by Rs 25 each to end at Rs 7450 and Rs 7455 from the last close of Rs 7425 and Rs 7430 respectively. Raw silver .916 fineness hardened by Rs 20 to Rs 7335 from Rs 7305.

DCB branch

MUMBAI: Development Credit Bank Ltd (DCB), a fast growing scheduled commercial bank, has opend a hi-tech, Y2K compliant branch at Fort in Mumbai. The branch was inaugurated by Prof A M Khusro, chairman, 11th Finance Commission, Government of India. Welcoming the audience at the inaugural function, the chairman of the bank, Naushad I Padamsee said that the Fort branch of DCB was fully Y2K compliant and technologically advanced and would be able to serve various needs of corporate clients through its credit, forex and treasury operations.

Moorat trading

MUMBAI: There will be a special "Diwali Moorat" trading sessionin bullion and oilseeds markets between 6 pm and 8 pm. At Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the special trading session will be from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm and on National Stock Exchange (NSE) from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm on Monday. However, other markets including sugar, spices, grains, pulses, cotton and metals will remain closed on Monday on account of Diwali.

BTC base

MUMBAI: Bio-Therapeutic Computers Inc (BTC), a leader in micro-current technologies will be establishing an operating base in India. BTC is establishing an operating base with the Trivedi group and Dr D J Sanghavi, a leading eye surgeon. The joint venture will be responsible for the manufacture of BTC’s computerized machines in India and providing training to technicians for the operations.

PPL to expand

MUMBAI: Paper Products Ltd (PPL) has expanded its flexible packaging capacity as well as entered into the carton business with the acquisition of the assets of the A & R Packaging unit of the APR Ltd, a Thapar group company. Withthis acquisition, PPL has now commenced production at the Hyderabad unit.

Ondia sales up

MUMBAI: Mirc Electronics Ltd (MEL), the manufacturers of the popular Onida brand has reported a 34 per cent increase in the net profit for the six months of the current year. While the CTV industry mired with price wars registered an average growth of 23 per cent, Ondia sales surged by 53.6 per cent during this period.
