
CHANDIGARH, Aug 5: Hosts Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21 and Carmel Convent, Sector 9 recorded easy victories on the opening day of the inaugural Shriman Ishwar Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament here today.
In the opening match, Carmel Convent defeated Shivalik Public School, Sector 41 by 19-6 after leading 6-4 at half time. The star performer for the winners was Neha Kohli who sunk basket from all angles. She topscored with 12 points. Shriya Singh contributed four points Carmel Convent to complete Shivalik8217;s rout. Ramya and Neha Goyal got four and two points respectively to reduce the margin for the losers.
Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21 carried too many guns against Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22 whom they routed by an impressive 40-6 margin. With hosts dominating the proceedings, Manpreet stole the show as he topscored with 14 points. She was ably supported by Harpreet Kaur who contributed eight points. Sandhya was the main Shishu Niketan8217;s player. This spirited girl scored four points despite tough defence put up by Dev Samaj cagers.
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner-cum-Director Sports M Ramsekher inaugurated the meet.
Squash Circuit
The Squash Ranking Circuit which carries a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and is being conducted at Yadvindra Public School, Sector 51, SAS Nagar, has received a good response as so far 65 entries from different schools in Chandigarh and surrounding region have been received.
St Stephen8217;s, Sector 45 and Bishop Cotton School, Shimla are fielding 15 and 13 players respectively. St John8217;s are sending 11 players while, Lawrence School, Sanawar have confirmed participation of their six players.
Three boys from Army Public School, Dagshai have also staked their claim for the top honours. The players Yadvindra Public School, Patiala are also likely to compete. The tournament will begin tomorrow at 4 p.m. while final will be played on August 8.
