COLOMBO, October 22: Cricket authorities today began probing allegations that a top cricket official had demanded money for granting broadcasting rights to a foreign television network.

8220;We don8217;t know the true picture yet. The sports minister has asked the board president to submit a report within two weeks,8221; said Dammika Ranatunga, the chief executive officer of the Sri Lankan cricket board.

Sports minister Sumanaweera Dissanayake also has asked the country8217;s bribery and corruption commission to investigate whether the unnamed official had taken the money.

The Island and the mid-week Mirror newspapers reported that a WorldTel official had complained to Upali Dharmadasa, the cricket board president, that a board official had demanded 100,000 for giving exclusive telecast rights.

WorldTel is currently negotiating a 5.5 million deal with the cricket board for rights to cover cricket matches in the island nation over the next three years.

WorldTel officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

BOMB BLAST CONCERN: English cricket officials are reviewing whether to send their a team to Sri Lanka following a bomb blast in the Island nation8217;s capital.

But Raja Singham, a spokesman for the Sri Lanka cricket board, said today there was no cause for concern in this cricket-crazed nation.

8220;We indeed are fighting terrorism, but we can guarantee that it is absolutely safe to play cricket in Sri Lanka,8221; Singham said. 8220;I don8217;t think any of the countries that are due here in 1998 will refuse to come because of a bomb blast.8221;

Following the violence in Colombo, English cricket board officials said they were reviewing a proposed two-month tour of Sri Lanka by an 18-player team due here in January.
