
LINARES, January 12: Foemer world championship challenger Grandmaster Victor Korchnoi 2.5 of Switzerland blundered his queen in a totally winning position and was shocked by International Master Julian Estrada 3.5 of Mexico in the fourth round of Anibal International Grandmasters8217; Chess Tournament being played here today.
Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua 3 and national champion Abhijit Kunte 3 notched up creditable wins to lead the Indian challenge. International Master Lanka Ravi 2.5, playing with a disadvantage of black pieces, held Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay 2.5 to a draw in 47 moves of Sicilian Defence.
Among the women, International Women Master Bhagyashree Thipsay 2.5 defeated Australian International Master Alex Wohl 1.5 while Swati Ghate 2 drew with International Master K Murugan 2.
Grandmaster Barua was at his best against Argentina8217;s Javier Moreno 2, who tried to confuse Barua with Reti opening but come to grief as the Indian maestro launched a heavy offensive against the whiteKing. Playing a series of brilliant moves, Barua won a piece and forced the Argentine to resign after 48 moves.
Kunte sacrificed a pawn from the white side of French Defence and gained a good attack in the bargain. Del Rio Spain had to give back three pawns to survive against Abhijit8217;s active pieces. With two pawns ahead, the Kunte scored a neat victory with precise play.
