February 24: Her smile of warmth and assurance has been exploited to sell the most diverse products. Corporate fried chicken and the ubiquitous syrup rely on her gleaming smile on television to convince the suspicious masses.

Nothing but her confident advice can draw the crowds away from quacks, hakims and vaidyas. From time immemorial, we have turned 8212; when all else has failed 8212; to grandma and her storehouse of remedies. First aid, quick relief and a guaranteed smile back on your face are the incentives. And when her home-made elixirs work, who are we to dispute the wisdom of the ages? Here are a few home remedies8217; for common ailments, the way grandma makes them:

Indigestion

A common ailment, indigestion affects the best of us at some time or the other. A simple remedy is to take a spoonful of ginger juice and teaspoon of lemon juice mixed with a bottle of soda. Salt or sugar can also be added. Another solution is to soak two or three tulsi leaves in a glass of water, overnight, and drink thisearly the next morning. It cleans your bowels and purifies the blood as well. You can also eat a little ajwain8217; or heat a mixture of buttermilk, water, cumminseed jeera curry leaf and fresh ginger as a refreshing drink for the night.

However, the best way to keep digestion problems at bay is to use a small piece of ginger in your daily meals, in any form.

Dysentery

Rushing for the tablets is a natural course of action, you would think. If you do not have any tablets at hand though, grind some curry leaf twigs, mix the paste with a glass of buttermilk and drink the mixture two or three times a day. A reliable remedy for mild diarrhoea is the juice of the pomegranate fruit. A suitable diet like arrowroot biscuits should also help.

Another sure fire solution is to grind the kernel of mango seeds from mangoes that have been boiled and preserved in salt water as pickles. The kernels should be ground to a paste along with a little jeera in a half litre of milk. This mixture should then be dividedinto two parts and administered to the patient to drink twice at an interval of six hours. If it sounds confusing, it isn8217;t. Dry ginger powder mixed with buttermilk and taken after meals should help as well.

ColdPineapple is good for this eternal complaint, specially for those who catch it easily. For a head cold, place a little pepper powder in a bit of cloth, make a twist of it and hold it over a flame. Inhale the fumes when it begins to smoke.

An ancient cure is lime juice in hot water, with honey to taste. To prevent the germs from spreading, a sliced onion placed in ones8217; room should do the trick. Raw onions eaten twice or thrice a day will help clear stuffed nostrils and also relieve patients of asthma, nasal and bronchial catarrh.

CoughA sure accompaniment to any cold, honey mixed with ground licorice is an old household remedy. Another simple solution, for those who cough at night, is honey in a hot drink taken before bed time. You can also use a few tulsi or ajwain leaves withboiling water while preparing tea, as a remedial measure. Another solution is a mixture of lemon juice, honey and glycerine. The ever popular ginger used twice or thrice a day is always helpful.

For phlegm congestion, try drinking a mixture of fenugreek leaves with a teaspoon of ginger juice, along with a little honey; two or three times a day. Dry coughs can be cured by gradually sipping a mixture of ghee and powdered cumminseed.

HiccupsCalling a doctor here, may not be necessary. All you have to do is give these simple things a try first:
