SURAT, Aug 27: An assistant engineer of the Sarigam GIDC in Valsad district was nabbed red-handed by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau on Tuesday, while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,500.

According to Valsad ACB Police Inspector A C Jadeja, Hasmukhlal Hirjibhai Pansania had demanded Rs 2,500 from one Mumtaz Bano, a resident of Sarigam in Valsad district, to get some papers related to land signed.

Bano had bought an empty plot of land in Sarigam GIDC more than six months ago. As per the law, she had to get some papers verified from the GIDC department that would establish her ownership over the land as it was in the GIDC area.

Subsequently, she then submitted the papers to Pansania for verification. However, despite repeated requests Pansania did not sign the papers. Doubtful, Bano then directly asked him if he wanted money to do the job. Pansania replied in the affirmative, saying he needed Rs 2,500 to get the work done and would hand over the papers once she gave over the amount.

She then contacted PI Jadeja of the Valsad ACB and with the help of the police, agreed to meet the official on Wednesday with the money. ACB sources said Pansania was nabbed red-handed, while accepting the bribe. The police also recovered powdered notes, given to Bano by the ACB officials.

Pansani was charged under sections 7, 13 and 13 a of the Prevention of Corruption Act. He was presented before the district magistrate on Thursday and remanded in judicial custody, the police said.
