GUWAHATI, FEB 21: The fate of the High School Leaving Certificate examination in Assam for the year 2000 is uncertain, with over two lakh school teachers of the state refusing to co-operate unless their long-standing demands are met.

The teachers have renewed their agitation after a gap of nine months, complaining that the government had failed to fulfil their grievances even after signing a memorandum of settlement with them in May last year.

The Asom Sikshak-Karmachari Samanwaya Samiti, the apex body of teachers in all categories of government schools, has already announced it would begin its agitation from February 23. The high school finals are slated to begin on March 7 and about 1.5 lakh students in the state are appearing for the examinations conducted by the Assam Board of Secondary Education.

According to the striking teachers8217; body, of the 12 demands which the government had agreed to fulfil, as many as eight were yet to be met, which includes, among others, regular payment of salary andwages.

According to the samanwaya samiti, the non co-operation would be for an indefinite period, and is aimed at halting the final exams.
