The Bengaluru South Division cybercrime police Wednesday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against an unknown person for allegedly misusing the name and identity of BJP Jayanagar MLA C K Ramamurthy.
The FIR comes after photos of a ‘Good Morning’ message sent to a young girl from a purported Instagram account of the MLA went viral earlier in the day.
According to the complaint filed by the MLA, fake social media accounts were created using his name and photographs without consent. These accounts were allegedly used to contact the public, solicit money under false pretences, and send misleading or abusive messages, thereby damaging the MLA’s reputation and public standing.
The MLA stated that these actions have caused significant harm to his reputation, dignity, and credibility. According to the complaint, the fake accounts are named ‘CK Ramamurthy’ on Facebook and ‘ck_ramamurthy’ on Instagram.
MLA Ramamurthy has also publicly suggested that the incident may be politically motivated and intended to tarnish his image, naming members of the Congress’s social media team as potential suspects.
The police have registered the case under Section 66D of the IT Act (cheating by personation using computer resources), and investigations are ongoing to trace the perpetrators.
