The Army has performed another complicated multiple-organ transplant with an officer8217;s 67-year-old mother giving new life to five soldiers across the country.

Lt Col Dinesh Talwar, posted along the LoC, consented to donate the organs of his mother, Usha Tanwar, who was declared brain dead by doctors at the Army Hospital R038;R on Saturday.

The liver was transplanted into a 24-year-old soldier suffering from cirrhosis of liver, one kidney was transplanted into a 54-year-old veteran suffering from an end-stage kidney disease while the second kidney was flown to Command Hospital, Pune, for transplantation to another veteran.

Lt Gen OP Mathew, commandant of Army Hospital R038;R, said that this was the tenth multi-organ donation at the hospital. 8220;The heart valves have been stored for later use. The eyes will be used on Monday for two different individuals who have lost their total vision in one eye,8221; an Army spokesperson said.

The operation was performed by the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Authority AORTA, established last year to increase awareness on brain death and promote organ donation. Over 2,000 serving personnel, veterans and their families have pledged to donate their organs.
