MUMBAI, May 31: Third seed Rohan Apte and top-seed Johann Fernandes won the under-14 boys and girls titles of the Bombay YMCA State Ranking Tennis Tournament played at the Andheri YMCA courts today.

Apte from Deccan Gymkhana, Pune, got past Keshav Narsimhan 6-2, 6-2. In the girls competition, Johann proved to be too strong for the under-12 champion Kartiki Bhat. Bhat, from Pune, faded away against the Johann8217;s power game, losing 2-6, 2-6.

Both Narshiman and Kartiki failed to add to their under-12 singles titles that they won in the morning. In the u-12 boys final, top seeded Narsimhan was stretched to three sets by seventh seed Vivek Menon. The seventh seed, of Bandra Gymkhana, lost 6-4, 6-7 7-4, 6-3 to his gymkhana mate.

In the girls u-12 final, top seeded Bhat did not allow her opponent Luzenka Periera to settle down and took the crown in straight sets with a score reading 6-1, 6-2.

In the u-14 girls final, Johann started off well as she broke Bhat on her first serve and held her serve to take alead of 2-0. The top seed in the under-14 again broke Bhat8217;s serve in the fifth game. Bhat came back strongly in the seventh game which was also the longest point. The game ultimately went to Bhat as her cross-court volley found Fernandes flat footed after a series of deuces.

In the second set, Bhat, who has entered eight tournament finals, she has participated this year, overhit her shots. The student of Pune8217;s Abhinav School conceded two games at love which cost her match.

In the boys u-14 final, Apte, a student of Pune8217;s Symbiosis School, covered the court better than his younger opponent, seventh seed Narsimhan of Mumbai, who played most of his shots from the baseline.
