Kochi, March 1: Viswanathan Anand of India played a safe draw against Veslein Topalov of Spain in the sixth round of the Ciudad de Linares Category 21 Chess Tournament yesterday, according to reports reaching here.Anand, black, employed the Caro-Kann Defence for the third time and seemed to have got a slightly better position after middle game exchanges, especially in the pawn structure. Topalov had the bishop pair in compensation, but then he gave up this benefit to capture a pawn.

The rooks and same coloured bishop ending hads nothing to offer for either player after 40 moves.

At the same time, Garry Kasaprov seemed to irritate Luis Rentero, the organiser of the tournament, who is against short draws, by splitting the point with his friend Vladimir Kramnik in just 26 moves of English Opening.
