153 Punjab govt staff volunteer for poll duty
KAPURTHALA: One hundred and fifty-three employees of govt departments in Punjab have volunteered themselves for election work in the next three phase of polls, Dy Commissioner Rakesh Verma said here on Monday.

EVM damaged as NC, Cong activists clash
JAMMU: There were reports of fisticuffs between rival party workers and complaints of booth capturing. According to official sources here, NC workers and supporters of Independent candidate Mumtaz Ahmed Khan clashed at a polling booth in Sakhi maidan in Poonch district. An EVM was damaged at the booth, the sources said. NC and Congress supporters exchanged blows at Teylote polling booth in Kalakote constituency.
Panthers Party leader among four killed in road accident
SRINAGAR: Panthers Party leader Vinod Kumar and three others were killed when a vehicle in which they were travelling skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Ramsu on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on Monday afternoon.
An official spokesman said Vinod, his personal security officer, driver and another Panthers Party worker were killed in the accident. Kumar was on way to Jammu from Pahalgam, the spokesman said.
Sporadic Violence reported throughout the day
SRINAGAR/JAMMU: Two persons were injured in a mine blast a few feet from a polling booth at village Shailhall in Handwara while they were queueing up to cast their ballot.
The injured Sonaullah Bhat and Ashiq Hussain Malik were rushed to District Hospital Handwara for the treatment.
In other poll related violence, 10 incidents of blasts and firing rocked Baramulla and Kupwara districts during the entire day of polling. However no loss of life was reported in these incidents. Chief Electoral Officer Pramod Jain said the blasts took place at Shailhall, Batapora, Giripora and two encounters at Karihama and Kandi in Kupwara district while one firing incident took place at Dangiwachi, a grenade exploded in Bandipore and a firing incident at Bandipore in which a fidayeen was injured who managed to escape. He said a jeep was burnt at Kreeri Pattan by mob.
