
PUNE, May 7: Top seed Akshay Jagdale8217;s campaign finally ended. The in-form Pune lad, who lacked tournament practice from past four months bowed to seventh seed Abhijit Mujumdar of Mumbai after putting up a good fight in the boys under-18 quarter-final of the Hero Honda State Ranking junior tennis tournament at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana, here today.
Apart from Akshay8217;s exit four more seeds fell by the way side in other age categories.
Unseeded Kalyan Sudarshan of Pune knocked-out second seed Agnel Glodwin of Mumbai 9-4 to enter the finals of boys under-10 section. He will meet top seed Arnav Jain of Mumbai in the decider.
Mumbai8217;s Rishi Bhel, fifth seed, upset forth seed Saurabh Kohli 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the under-14 quarters, while unseeded Hrishikesh Pataskar of Pune beat No.6 Allan Moses of Mumbai 9-6 in boys under-12. In the boys under-16, No.3 Ankit Doshi of Mumbai went down his citymate and No.8 Abedin Sham 3-6, 1-6.
Mazumdar displaying a superb all-round tennis overcame Akshay8217;s challenge 6-4, 6-7 7-9, 6-4 in a three-and-a-half hour battle. Building his attack from baseline, Muzumdar enjoyed the fifth break in the fifth game of first set to take 3-2 lead and maintained it in the latter part of the set to take it 6-4.
Muzumdar had a chance to wrap the match five times, in the second set but time and again let Akshay off the hook allowing the Pune lad to level the set in the tie-breaker, after trailing 5-6 0-40 at one stage.
In the third set, Muzumdar looked transformed. He played aggressively and attacked the net constantly to break Akshay in the fifth, seventh and finally wrapped up the match with a break in the ninth to pocket the match.
