As leaves begin to turn hues of orange and red, and the autumn air settles in, it’s time to transition our skincare routine to suit the changing season.

Fall brings with it a unique set of challenges for our skin — from cooler temperatures and lower humidity to the need for added protection from environmental factors.

Explaining the same, Dr Bhavuk Mittal, dermatologist and director, Skinprime Skin Hair & Laser clinic, Ghaziabad said that fall weather can have a significant impact on the skin, and understanding these effects is crucial for maintaining healthy, radiant skin during this season.

“As the temperature drops and the humidity decreases, it can lead to skin dryness. Dry air saps moisture from the skin, causing it to become dehydrated, tight, and flaky. This cooler weather can also cause skin irritation as it can lead to redness, itching, and sensitivity, making your skin more vulnerable to external irritants,” he told indianexpress.com.

Along with this, the windy weather can be harsh on the skin, leading to chapping, windburn, and increased moisture loss, making the skin feel rough, Dr Mittal shared.

Contrary to popular perception, Dr Mittal said that UV radiation is still present on cloudy days, so it’s essential to protect your skin from its harmful effects, such as premature ageing and skin cancer.

So, how exactly is our skincare routine in fall different from other seasons?

According to Dr Mittal, our skincare routine should be adjusted to address the specific challenges of this season. Here’s how it differs:

*Hydration emphasis: Fall skincare places a more significant emphasis on hydration due to the dry weather. Look for products that offer intense moisture, such as thicker creams and hydrating serums.

*Sunscreen continuation: Unlike the summer when you may be more vigilant about sun protection, it’s important to continue using sunscreen daily in the fall, even on cloudy days.

*Moisturising cleansers: Opt for cleansers with moisturising properties to prevent dryness from the outset. This is particularly important if you’re coming from the more humid summer months.

*Focus on barrier repair: Fall skincare often includes products aimed at repairing the skin’s natural barrier, as it can become compromised by dry, windy conditions.

Here are 6 tips to take care of your skin during fall season:

1. Moisturise: Use a heavier, hydrating moisturiser to combat dryness. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides to lock in moisture.

2. Sunscreen: Continue to use sunscreen daily. Even during the fall, UV rays can damage the skin. Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

3. Gentle cleansing: Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser to prevent further moisture loss. Avoid harsh cleansers that can strip your skin of its natural oils.

4. Exfoliation: Exfoliate your skin regularly to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. However, be cautious not to over-exfoliate, as it can worsen dryness and irritation.

5. Humidifiers: Consider using a humidifier to add moisture to the indoor air, especially if you spend a lot of time indoors. This can help combat dryness.

6. Protection from wind: When outdoors, shield your face with a scarf or a hat to protect it from the wind. This can prevent windburn and chapping.

By following these tips, you can help your skin stay healthy and radiant throughout the autumn months.
