Students and their friends requested Dr Radhakrishnan to allow them to celebrate his birthday on September 5; however, Dr Radhakrishnan denied. Instead, he said that it would be a privilege if the day were celebrated as Teachers’ Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers in society.

On a typical morning, as the sun rises over Assam’s tea gardens, Debajit Ghosh sets out on a long and arduous journey. Nearly 150 km of travel lies a route that cuts through the Dihing Patkai National Park, where the risk of elephant crossings is real and roads often turn into muddy stretches when it rains. Yet, none of this deters the 34-year-old, who remains committed to reaching his school and teaching children who once had to drop out after the primary level.

1. Unsung Guiding Light in Classrooms
Teachers are often the quiet guiding light behind every student’s success, along with parents. They don’t seek applause or recognition, yet they dedicate countless hours preparing lessons, grading papers, and offering support—both academic and emotional even after completing working hours. By noting down these small gestures your teacher does in class, you can make him or her special and recognise her or his efforts. These efforts shared through speech or poem, will make them remember it for a long.
2. A Thank You Letter to My Favourite Teacher
You can draft a personal and heartfelt letter to your teacher thanking him or her for their patience, encouragement and unwavering belief. You can tell him or her how they teach the subject and how their guidance made you believe that you can conquer those challenges in the subject. As it’s a personal letter, you can mention some emotional moments when you liked or disliked her the most. You should be honest with your feelings while penning down the letter.
3. A Memory or Appreciation Jar
The appreciation or memory jar is a heartfelt and creative way for all classroom students to show their gratitude to a teacher. Rather than an individual activity, it’s a well-thought-out classroom or group activity where students will take a jar and fill it with small, handwritten notes from each student in the class.
These notes can include words of appreciation, favourite memories shared with the teacher, or genuine compliments that reflect how much the teacher means to them. It can be simple like thanking the teacher for making you understand fractions or allowing you to attend a picnic despite you being the naughtiest in the classroom. It’s a simple gesture, but it carries a lot of emotional weight and creates a lasting keepsake.
In this activity, you can prepare short performances that can include singing, dancing, poetry recitation, or even acting out classroom scenes. This is the way you can mimic your teacher’s teaching style, their catchphrases, or classroom habits playfully and respectfully. It’s very important for students to remain hilarious yet respectful in the entire process.
–When writing your speech, it’s important not to use generic or overused phrases like “Teaching is the noblest profession” or “Teachers are our second parents.” While these phrases are true, they have been heard countless times and can make your speech feel predictable and boring. Instead, try aiming for some original expressions.
–Another common error students make is making the speech too long or too short. Try having a balanced speech length — around 2 to 3 minutes can be considered ideal.
–Avoid using complex language or difficult vocabulary. Your goal is to connect with everyone in the assembly, from younger students to teachers, so keep your words clear and heartfelt. Using layman’s language can also be preferred by students.
Step 1: Understanding the occasion
We all know why we celebrate Teachers’ Day in India. Right? It is celebrated every year on September 5 to mark the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a respected teacher and former President of India. This sets the tone for your speech — it’s about gratitude, inspiration, and the role of teachers in shaping lives. Starting your speech with a quote from Dr Radhakrishnan or any anecdote related to his life and teaching can leave an impression. You need to understand that the tone of your words in the speech should be formal, respectful and yet full of gratitude for your teachers and principals.
This Award was first instituted in the year 1958 to felicitate remarkable teachers and head masters in their quest to improve the quality of school education and enrich their students’ learning experiences.
On Teachers’ Day, I salute all the gurus who are helping students realise their full potential. Their hard work and dedication is fostering excellence, illuminating lives and contributing to national development, Union Minister while sharing the sand art by International Sand Artist and Padma Shri Awardee, Sudarsan Pattnaik posted.

Apart from India’s observance, World Teacher’s Day is celebrated globally on October 5. It was established by UNESCO in 1994 to mark the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, recognising their rights and responsibilities. The global day is dedicated to highlighting teachers’ role in education systems worldwide.
Born in 1888, Dr. Radhakrishnan was a renowned scholar of philosophy who later became the first Vice President (1952–1962) and second President of India (1962–1967). He believed that teachers should be the best minds in the country and stressed the importance of education in national development. His contributions as a teacher, academic, and leader form the reason his birthday is commemorated as Teacher’s Day in India.
Teacher’s Day is meant to acknowledge the contribution of teachers in imparting knowledge and building values in students. It provides an opportunity for students to express gratitude to their teachers. The tradition began in 1962, when the Government of India declared Dr Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary as Teachers’ Day, following his request that his birthday be observed not as a personal celebration, but as a day dedicated to teachers.
