Post Covid-19 care: Expert-approved measures to beat fatigue

In the wake of rising cases of Covid-19 in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala, post-Covid care is again in focus. This includes everything from tackling the infection’s effect on the body, long Covid to fatigue post-recovery too. We spoke to experts on what are some of the essential ways that can help in tackling fatigue, and prove beneficial for Covid-19 aftercare.
While many people experience mild symptoms, others may face lingering effects known as long Covid. “This comprehensive care approach involves physical, mental, and emotional well-being,” said Dr Viswesvaran Balasubramanian, consultant interventional pulmonology and sleep medicine, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Patients may experience tiredness fatigue or even low-grade fever. Patients may also complain of breathlessness, shortness of breath, cough, or chest pain or either increase or decrease or even irregular heart rate, described Dr Sandeep Nayar, principal director, and HOD – chest and respiratory diseases, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi.
Dr Nayar mentioned that while fatigue is difficult to define, it generally includes feeling sleepy or lack of energy. “It may even include brain fog and tiredness. Other symptoms indicating fatigue are headache, myalgia, irritability, short-term memory problems, blurred vision, and lack of concentration,” said Dr Nayar.
What are the ways that can help?
The treatment is mostly symptomatic and is tailored according to the organ involved e.g. if the patient is having breathlessness then the pulmonologist will take care or in case of heart involvement, the cardiologist might prescribe medicine accordingly, added Dr Nayar.

S.C Sharma, Ghaziabad-based, co-ordinator therapist and naturopath expert said, “Gradually reintroduce physical activity, starting with light exercises and gradually increasing intensity. Adequate rest is essential to combat post-Covid fatigue; ensure you get sufficient sleep each night,” said Sharma.

Experts urge that one should monitor lingering symptoms, celebrate small victories, and, above all, listen to one’s body. “Recovery is a journey—be patient and compassionate with yourself,” said stressed Dr Kotaru.
Covid-19 can impact the cardiovascular system. “Hence regular check-ups, blood pressure monitoring, and cardiac assessments are crucial in post-recovery care. Exercise programs should consider cardiovascular health, ensuring a safe and gradual return to regular activity,” said Dr Balasubramanian.

Rest
After Covid, your body needs ample time to recover. Prioritise rest; listen to your body’s cues and don’t hesitate to take naps or get extra sleep at night. This downtime is crucial for your body to rebuild its strength, noted Dr Kotaru.

Hydrate
Water is your ally in the recovery process. “It helps flush out toxins, supports organ function, and aids in maintaining overall health. Ensure you’re hydrating well to assist your body in its healing journey,” said Dr Kotaru.
Nutrient-rice diet
Fuel your recovery with a nutrient-rich diet. Emphasise fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. These provide essential vitamins and minerals that play a pivotal role in the rebuilding process.
Incorporate gentle exercises
Combat post-Covid fatigue with gentle exercises such as walking, stretching, or yoga. These activities not only promote physical well-being but can also contribute to mental clarity and improved mood, said Dr Kotaru.
Prioritise mental health
The journey to recovery encompasses not just physical but mental well-being. “Acknowledge and address any feelings of anxiety or depression that may accompany post-Covid life. Connect with friends and family, and seek professional support if needed,” said Dr Kotaru.
Your body communicates its needs, so pay attention. If you feel fatigued, grant yourself the grace to rest. Conversely, if you sense a surge of energy and a desire to engage in more activities, follow your body’s lead, said Dr Kotaru.
Individuals should work closely with healthcare professionals to tailor their care plans based on specific needs and circumstances. “Regular monitoring, a balanced lifestyle, and a supportive environment contribute significantly to a successful recovery from Covid-19,” said Dr Balasubramanian.
