If you think air pollution only affects us humans, you’re wrong. As air quality deteriorates in Delhi and its surrounding areas, it is important to take care of our animal companions as well. Pets, just like humans, can suffer from various health complications caused by poor air quality, such as respiratory problems and allergies. Air pollution can especially aggravate symptoms for pets with pre-existing respiratory conditions like bronchitis and asthma.

Apart from this, prolonged exposure to air pollution has negative effects on the heart and circulatory system, which may result in heart diseases. Additionally, it can cause irritation to your pet’s eyes and noses, leading to infections and discomfort.

Here are tips to take care of your pets amid rising air pollution, according to Dr Bhoomika R, product executive, Drools Pet Food and Dr Kunal Dev Sharma, co-chief commercial officer and financial officer, MaxPetZ:

1. Limit outdoor activities: Reduce the duration of your pet’s outdoor excursions, especially on days with poor air quality. Opt for early morning or late evening walks, as pollution levels are typically lower during these times.

2. Prioritise good indoor ventilation: Ensure a safe and controlled indoor environment for your pets. Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to expel indoor pollutants. Frequently use vaccum cleaners with HEPA filters to keep your home clean and free from dust particles.

3. Hydration is key: Make certain your pets have constant access to clean and fresh water. Maintaining proper hydration aids their bodies in coping with the effects of pollutants.

4. Enhance your indoor environment: Use air-purifying indoor plants, such as snake plants, spider plants, and others. These botanical beauties will improve the air quality. Prioritise clean air for you and your furry friend by investing in a top-notch air purifier. They can trap particles like dust, pet dander, and other pollutants.

5. Pet-friendly cleaning products: Use products that are free from harsh chemicals. Many conventional cleaning products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can contribute to indoor air pollution.
