Darker coloured lipsticks have higher content of magnesium, chromium and lead. It is best to keep the usage of dark coloured lipsticks to a minimum. (Source: Freepik)Whether a makeup expert or a newbie, there is one product we all reach out to — lipstick. That is because lipsticks have the power to make or break your look — a good lipstick can turn your look from simple to gorgeous, while a pale shade may dampen it. But, irrespective of the colour and type, proper application demands practice and finesse.
Highlighting the same in an Instagram post, Dr Aanchal Panth, a dermatologist, wrote, “Lipsticks are one of the most commonly used make-up item along with kajal,” adding that there are a few things to remember while using lipstick.

Avoid dark lipsticks on a daily basis
Light coloured lipsticks are a better choice. Darker coloured lipsticks have higher content of magnesium, chromium, and lead. It is best to keep the usage of dark coloured lipsticks to a minimum.
However, according to Dr. Mandeep Singh, Head of Department, Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram, “There is no proof to back up the assertion that dark lipsticks contain more magnesium and lead than light-coloured ones. Depending on the brand, lipstick formulations might differ significantly, but the colour of the lipstick is not a reliable predictor of its chemical makeup.”
Applying lipsticks directly
Use a lip balm with SPF as first layer. This will help in protecting the lips as well as prevent lip dryness. Adding to this, Dr Singh said, “Applying a lip balm with SPF before lipstick is a simple but effective way to protect your lips from the sun, improve your lipstick application, and keep your lips moisturised and healthy.”
Always using liquid matte lipsticks
Prefer lightly tinted lip gloss. You can sometimes take a break from lipsticks and instead go for a tinted lip gloss. Lip gloss have very small amount of pigment and are mostly made of moisturising ingredients.

Avoid sleeping with lipstick on
Remove all bits of lipsticks properly before sleep. You must thoroughly remove all the lipstick like you do with kajal before sleeping. We tend to neglect the lips and there can be bits of lip colour on the corner of lips or on inner border. Use micellar water or cleansing balm to completely remove makeup. As per Dr Singh, this is an essential step because “removing lipstick before sleeping can help keep your lips healthy, prevent stains on bedding, and avoid any potential negative health effects from ingesting or clogging pores with lipstick ingredients.”
Skipping lip care at night
Use generous amount of lip balm at night before you sleep. Lip care is as important as applying serums and moisturisers on your face. Night is the time for skin recovery. So, apply a thick layer of lip balm or lip sleeping mask to avoid lip drying.
Here are some tips by Dr Singh to take care of your lips during nighttime:
*Remove any lip products: Before going to bed, remove any lipsticks, lip balms, or lip glosses that you might have applied during the day. This will allow your lips to breathe and prevent any build-up of product on your lips.
*Exfoliate your lips: Use a gentle lip scrub or a soft-bristled toothbrush to exfoliate your lips. This will help remove any dead skin cells and promote healthy cell turnover, resulting in softer, smoother lips.
*Apply a lip treatment: Once your lips are clean and exfoliated, apply a nourishing lip treatment. Look for a lip balm or lip mask that contains hydrating ingredients such as shea butter, cocoa butter or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients will help lock in moisture and protect your lips from dryness.
*Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is essential for healthy lips. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and before going to bed to help keep your lips hydrated and prevent dryness.
