While you may see your productivity levels increase for a brief period with caffeine, when it comes to skincare, it can be a double-edged sword.

An energy booster for some, and a way to kickstart the morning for others, coffee is among the most loved beverages around the world. While you may see your productivity levels increase for a brief period after consuming caffeine, when it comes to skincare, it can be a double-edged sword. Despite being lauded for its antioxidant properties, caffeine can have unalterable side effects on the skin.

Highlighting the same in an Instagram post, Dr Kaveri Karhade, a dermatologist wrote, “Caffeine is a diuretic, which means it can lead to fluid loss. If you don’t drink enough water to compensate for this fluid loss, you may become dehydrated, which can, in turn, cause dry skin.”

Not only this but there are also other problems that can be caused by excessive caffeine. These include:

*The high acidity of coffee can interfere with your hormones and impact the amount of oil your skin produces.

*Coffee drinks with dairy products increase your risk of developing acne.

*Dry skin patches can appear around your nose and chin area.

*Dehydration from coffee and other drinks, such as soda or alcohol, may also cause skin redness and inflammation.

However, Dr Mandeep Singh, HOD-Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram said that while caffeine is a diuretic and can contribute to mild dehydration, there isn’t sufficient evidence to directly link excessive caffeine consumption to dry skin. “But it’s worth noting that excessive caffeine intake can indirectly affect your skin’s moisture levels,” he added.

The expert also noted that excessive caffeine consumption can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to insufficient rest. “Inadequate sleep can contribute to various skin issues, including dullness, inflammation, and impaired skin barrier function, which can result in increased water loss and dryness.”

Moreover, he pointed out a connection between caffeine and acne. “Caffeine, being a stimulant, can potentially increase stress levels by triggering the release of stress hormones like cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels may lead to increased sebum production, which can contribute to the development of acne. Excessive caffeine intake can also disrupt sleep patterns, which in turn may affect hormone regulation and potentially worsen acne symptoms,” he said.

Concluding, he said, “To prevent potential side effects of excessive caffeine consumption on the skin, one should limit caffeine intake to moderate levels. Aim for no more than 400 mg per day (approximately 2-3 cups of coffee). Individuals should also drink a lot of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, practice good skincare habits, prioritise a balanced diet, manage stress levels through relaxation techniques and ensure adequate sleep. Everyone’s tolerance and response to caffeine vary, so pay attention to your body’s signals and adjust your caffeine intake accordingly.”
