Acclaimed singer Kumar Sanu was recently spotted undergoing chiropractic adjustments in an Instagram video. The video, from Dr Rajneesh Kant, a chiropractor, read, “Bollywood star singer Kumar Sanu first time take chiropractic treatment (sic). ”
However, many users quickly pointed out the “sound effects” used in the video. “The sound effects are not in sync,” one user wrote, while another added, “The sound was not real; it is totally fake.”
We contacted medical experts to understand more about chiropractic adjustments and what to remember.
Chiropractic therapy is a “treatment of nervous system disorders and the musculoskeletal system to ease pain and inflammation.” According to Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, the therapy is used to tackle back pain, neck pain, joint pain in the arms or legs, and headaches.
“Chiropractors perform manipulations and adjustments to help your body heal itself. However, this type of non-surgical treatment is not suitable and recommended for all. One can experience side effects such as aches, pain, dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, paresthesia, discomfort, stiffness, and soreness,” said Dr Khatri.
Urging caution against undergoing fake chiropractic adjustments, Dr Amit Jimmy Nanda, who represents India at the World Federation of Chiropractors, told indianexpress.com, “This is added sound. It’s not real and can be dangerous. Doctors worldwide have shared this as a joke. The sound is fake. There are no joints in the stomach for such sounds to come.”
Further, Dr Khatri said that those with vitamin D deficiency, taking cancer treatment, or having musculoskeletal problems that take a toll on the bones, joints, ligaments, skeletal muscles, or tendons should refrain from chiropractic therapy. “It is better to seek help from an orthopedic without any delay for favorable outcome. Don’t opt for any treatment until and unless it is suggested by the orthopedic,” stressed Dr Khatri.
Remember, what works for others may not work for you. “Don’t follow any trends blindly on social media or whatever your friends recommend. Be attentive when it comes to your well-being and avoid any kinds of shortcuts,” said Dr Khatri.
