Adulteration in everyday food items has become a common issue, one that is a cause for concern for one and all — not just from an awareness point of view but health, too. In the wake of the same, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) keeps sharing useful and simple hacks that can help check for such adulterations.
“Adulteration of food deceives the consumer and can cause risk to their health. The purpose is to list out common methodologies available for food adulterants generally found in India,” FSSAI wrote on its website.
As such, in a recent post, it shared how to detect adulteration in milk with a simple test using a slanting surface. For the unversed, one of the most common adulteration practices is mixing water in milk to increase its volume.
“Is your milk adulterated with water? Here is how you can check it through a simple test,” FSSAI tweeted.

How to check for adulteration?
*Put a drop of milk on a polished slanting surface like plain glass.
How to read the results?
*Pure milk either stays or flows slowly leaving a white trail behind.
*Milk adulterated with water, on the other hand, will flow immediately without leaving a mark.
“Home testing of milk is very crucial as vendors, often, may adulterate it with water for increased profits. This causes more chances of customers being fooled, and may even cause health issues if the water is contaminated. So, it’s always better to be cautious and try this easy test at home as it can help you check the purity of milk,” Garima Goyal, a registered dietitian, told indianexpress.com.
What happens when adulterated water is used?
There are chances of transmission of water-borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid etc, said Goyal.
Does boiling milk kill any bacteria?
Boiling does kill most types of parasites, bacteria, and viruses. But if the water used to adulterate the milk is unfiltered tap water, then despite boiling adulterated milk not all the microbes and chemicals will get killed, said Goyal.
“Also, such type of pathogen-containing water needs at least 20 minutes of boiling to kill all the bacteria, viruses and other impurities present in it. Additionally, there are several bacterial species that survive the boiling temperatures too, such as clostridium botulinum,” said Goyal.
