A lot of celebrities have admitted to having ghee or clarified butter as the first thing in the morning. But have you ever wondered how this little dietary tweak aids your diet goals? We decided to ask experts what could be the benefit of such a change and whether it is good for the long term.

Payal Sharma, senior dietician, at Dharamshila Narayana Suprspeciality Hospital said starting your day with ghee can offer several health benefits. “Ghee or clarified butter with milk solids removed, is rich in saturated fats, which can provide a stable source of energy throughout the day. It contains medium-chain fatty acids that are easily digestible and quickly metabolised, promoting a sense of satiety,” said Sharma.

Ghee is a source of fat-soluble vitamins like A, E, and D, contributing to overall immune system support, skin health, and bone strength. It also contains antioxidants that may help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, added Sharma.

Ghee’s unique composition makes it an ideal choice for individuals managing diabetes, said Dr Archana Batra, a dietician and certified diabetes educator. “It has a low glycemic index, helping regulate blood sugar levels and providing a sustained release of energy throughout the day. Furthermore, ghee contains butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid known for its anti-inflammatory properties, promoting gut health and overall well-being,” said Dr Batra.

Consuming ghee in the morning can aid in the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients from other foods, enhancing their bioavailability. “Additionally, ghee is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit joint health,” said Sharma.

Including ghee in your morning routine may also support digestive health by promoting a healthy balance of gut bacteria. “The butyric acid in ghee is thought to nourish the intestinal lining, potentially aiding in the prevention of digestive issues,” said Sharma.

Dr Batra shared that as a versatile culinary ingredient, ghee complements a variety of breakfast options, from spreading it on toast to adding a spoonful to your morning oatmeal.

It’s important to note that while ghee has potential health benefits, moderation is key, as it is high in calories. Consulting with a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes is advisable, mentioned Sharma.
