Harvard-trained gastroenterologist Dr Saurabh Sethi recently listed five signs that indicate the body needs more nutrition. “5 signs your body needs more nutrition. I’m a gastroenterologist,” he said in a video on YouTube Shorts.

Here’s what he listed.

*Brittle nails. This indicates a deficiency of protein and iron in the diet

*Twitching in the eyelids or the limbs indicates magnesium deficiency, which is critical for transmitting nerve impulses

*Clicking sounds at the joints could be a sign of vitamin D3 or calcium deficiency

*Premature greying of the hair, which could indicate a deficiency of vitamin B12, which is crucial for RBC production and oxygen transport at the hair follicles. This could also be a sign of copper deficiency, which is responsible for melanin production and imparts colour to your hair.

*Easy bruising. This could mean you are running short of vitamin C, which is responsible for collagen formation. It could also mean a deficiency of vitamin K1, which helps in blood clotting.

Dr Amreen Sheikh, Chief Dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, verified that these are signs that should not be ignored. “The body often gives early warning signs when it lacks key nutrients. These signs can appear in simple, everyday ways, such as brittle nails, muscle twitching, or early greying hair. Noticing these clues can help you address deficiencies before they become serious health issues,” Sheikh said.

What does it mean if nails are brittle or break easily?

Sheikh mentioned that brittle nails often suggest that your body isn’t getting enough protein or iron. “Both are important for nail strength and repair. Adding more eggs, lentils, leafy greens, and lean meats to your diet can help restore strength and shine to your nails,” said Sheikh.

Why do eyelids or limbs sometimes twitch on their own?

Frequent eye or muscle twitching can indicate a magnesium deficiency. “Magnesium helps nerves and muscles relax properly. A simple way to improve this is to include foods like nuts, seeds, whole grains, and bananas, which are rich in this mineral,” said Sheikh.

What if I hear clicking or popping sounds in my joints?

Sheikh reiterated that a clicking sound may indicate that your body needs more vitamin D3 or calcium, nutrients that help keep bones strong and joints healthy. “Spending some time in the sun, along with consuming dairy products, mushrooms, or fortified plant-based milk, can help meet your daily requirements,” said Sheikh.

Can premature hair greying be linked to nutrition?

When hair starts to grey early, it may indicate a deficiency in vitamin B12 or copper. Sheikh said that these nutrients help maintain natural hair colour and support oxygen flow to the scalp. Adding foods like dairy, eggs, seafood, and nuts can help, said Sheikh.

Why do some people bruise easily without any clear reason?

Sheikh shared that easy bruising may show that your body lacks vitamin C or vitamin K1.

“Vitamin C helps build collagen, while vitamin K1 supports normal blood clotting. Fresh fruits like oranges, guava, and leafy greens can strengthen blood vessels and skin,” said Sheikh.
