Over the years, we all have made changes to our diet and how we consume our meals and even satiate our cravings. That applies to even actor Satyadeep Misra, who gave us a glimpse into a tempting breakfast platter while on a Maldivian vacation recently with his wife and fashion designer Masaba Gupta.
“10 years ago, I would have dived into this tray at breakfast!” shared Misra on an Instagram Stories picture of croissants and muffins. He then posted another story on what he has evolved to stick to for his breakfast. “Older and wiser now,” shared Misra, alongside a picture showing some fruits, nuts, cheese cubes, and lean protein.
Can we also learn something from this habit change?
Considering many of us tend to forgo our diet when we eat from a buffet, especially an English kind that includes a variety of croissants, muffins, waffles, cream rolls, and pancakes, to name a few, experts urge that there are several “disadvantages” when it comes to starting your day with a calorie-dense breakfast.
“On top of it, more sugary dressings or fillings are added to them such as chocolate syrup, maple syrup, honey, jam, etc. Also, consuming calorie-dense side dishes such as sweetened juice or hash brown potatoes further adds to the calories. Those aiming for weight loss should especially refrain from having such types of breakfast,” said clinical dietitian Garima Goyal.
Such bakery items, made with butter, also increase sodium in the diet. “Consuming high amounts of sodium is not good for the health and especially for those who have the issue of high blood pressure. Also, this predisposes an individual to the risk of cardiovascular diseases,” mentioned Goyal.
Additionally, most of these foods are made from refined ingredients such as refined wheat flour or maida, refined sugar, etc. because of which they “provide poor satiety value and also cause a sudden spike in blood sugar levels“.
Therefore, such foods are not an ideal breakfast option as they will give hunger pangs to you soon after you have eaten them.
So, what is an ideal breakfast?
It should be something nutritious and wholesome as you have to break an 8-10 hour long fast, something that energises your body immediately and also fulfills your appetite. “The plate shown here is an ideal breakfast plate that includes a mix of nuts such as pistachios, walnuts, cheese slices, and lean protein meat sources,” mentioned Goyal.
Why have these?
Nuts – Nuts add extra protein and fibre to the diet and having them in breakfast is an excellent option to provide satiety value to the body. “Having a handful of nuts will stop cravings and hunger pangs and keep you full for a longer period. Also, nuts are loaded with heart-healthy fats such as monounsaturated fats which lower the levels of bad cholesterol in the body. Nuts contain some of the most important vitamins and minerals we eat. Other minerals that nuts contain are the B vitamins, vitamins A, C, and E, calcium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, phosphate, potassium, and selenium,” mentioned Goyal.
Lean protein – Have lean protein food options for breakfast such as chicken wings, poultry, eggs, etc. Vegetarians can have sprouts salad or fenugreek seeds salad for breakfast too. “Dairy is another protein-packed option you can find in various delicious forms such as Greek yoghurt, kefir, skyr, cottage cheese, and filtered high-protein milk. Dairy also provides vital nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and probiotics that contribute to a healthy gut microbiome, weight management, muscle maintenance, and heart health. Protein helps in body cell growth and repair and gives high satiety value,” said Goyal.
Cheese slice – If consumed within limits, cheese is not bad rather, it is a great option to add protein and calcium to a meal. According to Goyal, the high amounts of antioxidant nutrients in cheese help prevent free radical damage and cell mutations, thus helping retard the ageing process of the cells. “Several studies have also shown that conjugated linoleic acid, a compound found in cheese may help prevent the formation of tumour cells and metastasis of cancer cells,” mentioned Goyal.
