Suniel Shetty on his habits (Source: Suniel Shetty/LinkedIn)Suniel Shetty has been a discliplinarian all his life. And that he believes stems from his ability to wake up before daybreak, as early as 5 am. In a video shared on his LinkedIn, Shetty shared, “In my book, success is a product of daily habits and consistency. Knowing this, I built a set of habits that I know will help me move forward. I want to add healthy years to my life. That’s why being the CEO of my own life is extremely important,” he said.
He continued, “I usually wake up at 5 am which means I get a clear four or five hours before I get to work which means that a lot happens in those hours. The best part is that there are no distractions at all, and is the most peaceful time of the day. I can gather my thoughts and allow the luxury of feeling composed. This habit has allowed me to grow personally. I practice yoga, breathing exercises which has been a real gamechanger in my life.”
Shetty, 61, also mentioned that he heads to the gym for at least one hour every day post a “quick cold shower”. “A quick cold shower and I go off to the gym which is my everything. That one hour in the gym without a phone and with just pure exercise is absolute bliss for me,” he expressed.
Detailing his lifestyle choice, Shetty said that he believes that waking up early has brought about amazing changes in his life. “I believe waking up early is the way to bring about change in our lives. These 4-5 hours are my golden hour. I get chai time with my mother most mornings. My wife sits with me for breakfast but she eats later as she is on IF (intermittent fasting). Early mornings also give me a sense of control and belief that you are ahead and definitely winning,” he said.
The Hera Pheri actor added, “This lifestyle choice gives me detail on lifestyle, diet, mindset, sleep. It plays a crazy role in optimising my health, and my energy levels.”
How does he do it?
Nonchalantly, Shetty said, “It requires a lot of discipline which spills over into every other aspects of life. It is like a muscle that gets stronger as you continuously train. With time, I have got better in time management.”
In the caption of the video, he mentioned, “I know so many people who do their best work in the quiet of the night, and I’m absolutely sure that each has their own benefits. Although in my case, I’ve felt the transformative impact of embracing the morning hours and creating intentional habits.”

How does waking up early help with discipline?
Creating a structured morning routine can help to set the tone for a productive day, explained Varun Rattan, co-founder of The Body Science Academy, Noida. “Adopting habits such as exercise, meditation, and goal-setting, can give you a sense of consistency and purpose that extends throughout your daily activities,” said Rattan.
What are some of the top habits?
Meditation and mindfulness
Practicing meditation and mindfulness can have a profound impact on your mental health. “Dedicating a portion of your morning routine to quiet reflection can set a positive tone for the day and develop a greater sense of self-awareness. Performing gentle stretches for a few minutes each morning can reduce muscle tension and help improve your flexibility,” said Rattan.
Jumpstart your day with exercise
If you often hear yourself complaining there’s no time for exercise, waking up early gives you ample time for it. Engaging in physical activity during the morning hours can help to jumpstart your metabolism, improve your mood, and increase your energy levels for the day ahead.
Healthy breakfast and hydration
According to Rattan, rolling out of bed at the crack of dawn gives you ample time to prepare a nutritious breakfast. Fueling your body adequately will give you the energy and focus needed to tackle your daily tasks. Make a habit to drink at least a glass of water upon waking. This replenishes the fluids lost during sleep and promotes optimal cognitive function.
Enhance your metabolic rate
Activities such as exercise, proper nutrition, and hydration can boost your metabolic rate. This, in turn, can help in weight management, increase energy levels, and better overall health, said Rattan.
Boost your productivity
One of the most important benefits of waking up early is that it gives you the opportunity to get more work done. With fewer distractions, you can complete important tasks efficiently, added Rattan.
Consistent sleep-wake cycle
We all love to hit the snooze button and sleep in on the weekends. But maintaining a consistent sleep-wake cycle would make you more productive. Sure, being an early riser has its perks, but one should not reduce the total hours of sleep they need to feel energised after waking up. For those of us who don’t work night shifts, try having an early dinner, hitting the bed by 10 pm, and rising with the roosters at 5 am, said Rattan.
