Amitabh Bachchan recently opened up about certain age-related struggles, admitting that even mundane tasks like wearing trousers need careful consideration, and elaborating on how he has been trying to keep up. In a heartwarming post on his blog, the Don actor wrote, “It is a wonder that the normal actions, earlier, now require the mind to think before they can be exercised ..simple acts .. putting on the trousers …the doctors advise please Mr Bachchan, sit down and wear them .. do not try to stand while you put them on, you could lose balance and fall ..And inside I sort of smile in disbelief .. until I find they were so right .. that simple act that came so naturally earlier is now governed by a selective routine ..(sic).”

He also revealed that there are handlebars installed at his home –– Jalsa — to make movement easier. “Oh boy!!! You need them all over to hold and steady the body before any physical act .. just the simplest of them being bending down to pick up that piece of paper that had flown off your desk with the breeze ..Seriously ..The bravado tells you to go ahead .. until you realise .. goodness, its a major problem .. the rapidity of its performing has slowed down with uncertainty ..readers of this shall have a small smirk and a hidden laugh at all that I express ..BUT ..dearest dears .. may none of you may have to go through this .. but let me tell you ..IT SHALL HAPPEN .. TO ALL OF US ..(sic).”

“I wish it does not .. but in time it shall ..,” he continued.

Underlying this phase of life, Bachchan, 82, likened age to a speed breaker. He wrote: “We all go downward the day we are brought into this World .. the down trend begins at birth …Sad .. but it is the reality of living and life …Youth races through life’s challenges with aplomb ..Age .. suddenly speed brakes your vehicle and tells you, apply the brakes to avoid the accelerated bump when you drive the vehicle of LIFE ..Oh dear! far too philosophical .. But philosophy is the marked subject of profound featuring, that eventually takes over ..You may have the courage to fight it for a while .. but eventually, sadly, we shall all lose .. A loss worth losing ..Your presence and job has been done and appreciated .. now break off .. and prepare .. !!!Ahhhhh .. sounding far too morbid and unserving.. but the fault lies in the haunting chants that have been presented to me by Shweta .Divinity at its utmost ..”

Adding that he follows an “early meal – early to bed” routine most days, the superstar wrote, “Change the routines and seek the difference …the early to bed and rise is not just a metaphor .. it works.”

According to him, the only change now is “just that now the routines programmed for the day are hounded by the routines of medication and essentials to be done.”

“Get the pranayaam, the mild yoga, right …do the mobility at the gym to be able to walk the talk and talk the walk .. to get the balances right .. the body gradually begins to loose its balance and there is a need to work on it to check and improve …Some routines that were there earlier, seem to suggest that because it was done some years ago, it shall be a cake walk to initiate them again..NAH .. no baby ..,” he wrote in his blog.

“Ageing is a part of life. It impacts mobility of people in their 80s due to weaker muscles, stiffer joints, and slower balance reflexes. Simple daily tasks like wearing trousers, buttoning a shirt, climbing stairs, or even doing household chores can feel challenging and tiring,” said Dr Anup Khatri, senior consultant, orthopaedics, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai.

Listing fatigue and weakness as the most common symptoms, the expert also said that simple tasks like bending to wear trousers may cause imbalance, or standing for too long while cooking can increase fatigue. “Sitting for a long time can induce back pain and leg numbness. While some may find walking long distances challenging, others may even find it difficult to get out of bed without assistance. Many become bedridden and completely immobile. There can be orthopaedic problems due to a limited range of motion and mobility. Leg, back, and neck pain are seen in a large number of people,” Dr Khatri said.

People tend to struggle with weaker bones, muscles, and joint pain. So, it is imperative to stay active and mobile even in the 80s. According to the doctor, making even small adjustments can help. “Gentle exercises like walking, stretching, and chair yoga improve strength and flexibility. Using supportive footwear, handrails, or walking aids can prevent falls. Breaking chores into smaller steps and taking rest breaks also makes tasks easier,” said Dr Khatri.

Occupational therapy and physiotherapy can teach seniors safe ways to move and adapt daily routines. “With the right support, many elderly people continue to live independently and confidently despite mobility changes. So, follow the expert’s advice and improve the quality of life,” said Dr Khatri.
