The grind of hustle culture seems to have reached new heights in Bengaluru. With many young professionals feeling pressured to be “always on,” even their downtime is no longer sacred. A recent incident at a local cinema has sparked debate about just how intense the city’s work culture has become.
A Redditor on r/Bangalore shared that during a screening of the film Lokah, “a woman in the row ahead opened her laptop and started working like she’s in office, typing away, in a theatre.” They went on to call the situation “chaotic,” adding, “People can’t even switch off for 2 hours without office pressure creeping in. Work-life balance? What’s that.”

The post quickly went viral, sparking a larger discussion about Bengaluru’s corporate grind. Some defended the woman, suggesting she may have been sneaking out of work and got caught in an unavoidable meeting. Others were less forgiving, calling it unprofessional.
“I would chalk this to sneakiness of employee where she might be skipping work without informing, and now she doesn’t have a way out of not attending the meeting,” one person commented. Another said, “Narayana Murthy might repost this as newly recommended company policy.”
Others complained about the disruption. “Yes.. i would definitely pay my money and travel all the way to watch a movie with the light from this lady’s monitor beaming at me. That is the only way i would prefer my movie,” wrote one irritated moviegoer.
Some felt the situation showed how deeply work has invaded personal lives. “Culture? This is slavery. I saw a guy working in a salon while getting a haircut,” said another user.
