Cash at judge’s door: 10 days for CBI court to frame charges

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday set a deadline of 10 days for a special CBI court in Chandigarh to decide on the issue of framing of charges against Justice (retd) Nirmal Yadav and other co-accused in the infamous cash at judge’s door scam. The directions were passed by Justice Paramjeet Singh on a communication sent by special CBI Judge Vimal Kumar,who had sought 15 days to decide on the issue. The special CBI court will now hear the arguments on framing charges on July 15.

Man shot dead over old enmity

Hoshiarpur: A 30-year-old man was allegedly shot dead over an old enmity when he was on his way to home in Garhdiwala town,police said Thursday. The victim Nishan Singh had come to attend a marriage function Wednesday night and was returning when the assailants fired at him. Police have lodged a case against eight persons under relevant sections of IPC. One of the accused has been arrested and a manhunt has been launched to nab the seven others,SSP,Hoshiarpur Sukhchain Singh Gill said.

75 per cent subsidy on maize seed

Chandigarh: Punjab government Thursday directed the agriculture department to set up maize dryers in all mandis at a cost of Rs 150 crore before the commencement of next kharif season. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also announced to provide 75 per cent subsidy on the purchase of maize seed.

One lakh tonne coal for Talwandi power plant

Chandigarh: With the Central Electrical Authority allotting one lakh tonnes of coal,the 1980-MW Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) can now test and commission its first unit of 660 MW. TSPL spokesperson Pramodh Dash said the plant will consume almost 20 per cent less coal as opposed to those based on conventional technology for power generation.

Road widening: Punjab to spend Rs 13,000 cr

Chandigarh: The Punjab government will spend Rs 13,740 crore in the next two years on widening highways and inter-city roads running,Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said Thursday. Sukhbir also reviewed the progress of the six-laning of several highways

Case against witnesses for turning hostile

Chandigarh: The Punjab vigilance bureau Thursday asked its field officers to open suitable legal proceedings against any witnesses who turned hostile in court. DGP and the Chief Director of Vigilance Bureau,Suresh Arora,directed officers to initiate appropriate legal action against a witness under Section 182 of CrPC if they turned hostile during a trial.

Chandigarh: Technical Education Minister Anil Joshi Thursday issued strict instructions to all the government and private technical education institutes to take preventive steps and ensure that freshers were not subjected to any harassment and ragging by the seniors.

Last date extended for delivering rice

Chandigarh: punjab government Thursday fixed July 31 deadline for rice millers for delivery of balance stock of rice to the central pool. Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Secretary D S Grewal said against the target of 85 lakh tonne of rice,millers have delivered 80 lakh tonne to the central pool. “The balance supply of 5 lakh tonne of rice is now to be delivered by July 31,” he said. The last deadline was June 30.

ZP,BS members to take oath on July 19

Chandigarh: The newly elected members of zila parishads and block samitis will be administered oath of office on July 19 in Ludhiana,an official said. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will administer the oath at a function,which will be presided over by Rural Development Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra.

Implement food security ordinance: Cong to CM

Chandigarh: The Punjab Congress Thursday Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to immediately revamp the public distribution system (PDS) and implement the Food Security Bill. Party MLAs said that neighbouring Haryana was launching the Food Security Act from August 20 but Punjab has not yet shown any inclination to adopt the Centre’s flagship programme.

Akali sarpanch’s brother shot dead

GARDIWAL: The brother of Hoshiarpur’s Kurdan village sarpanch was shot dead on Wednesday night while he was returning home with his family after attending a function. Following this,the police have booked five persons,including Akali Dal circle president Rajwinder Singh alias Raja,and three unidentified persons for the crime. Deceased Nishan Singh allegedly was involved in a land dispute with Rajwinder.
