Sundar C-Vishal’s Madha Gaja Raja to finally hit the screens after 12 year wait
Apart from Madha Gaja Raja, the Pongal holiday window would also see the release of Bala's Vanangaan (Jan 10), Madraskaaran (Jan 10), Nesippaaya (Jan 14), and Kadhalikka Neramillai (Jan 14)

Pongal is an important release window for Tamil cinema. It is festive, it is auspicious, and most importantly, it is a long holiday week, which allows films to have an extended opening week run. This time, it is even more special as Pongal falls on Tuesday, and films are hitting the screens right from the previous Friday, January 10. With the much-expected biggie, Vidaamuyarchi, starring Ajith Kumar and Trisha, bowing out of the race, there have been multiple films throwing in their hat into the Pongal ring. However, the most surprising competitor of them all is Sundar C’s Madha Gaja Raja, starring Vishal, Varalaxmi, Santhanam and Anjali.

Now, what is the surprise factor? The film went into production in 2012, and was ready for a release in 2013. And since then, almost every other year, the film almost hit the screens, but had to drop off due to financial issues. Interestingly, the initial release date was planned for January 12, 2013, and… well, 12th year is the charm, as the makers have announced that Madha Gaja Raja would be released worldwide on January 12, 2025. The announcement was shared by actor Santhanam, who hadn’t yet turned a lead actor when the film was made. Since then, Santhanam has bid adieu to playing comic sidekicks, and has turned into a hero, who has starred in over 15 films.
With music by Vijay Antony, a song called My Dear Lover-u, sung by Vishal, has attained cult status since then, and netizens have expressed jubilation of finally getting to watch their favourite song onscreen. In fact, in many interviews, Sundar C, who is known for his comedy films, revealed that Madha Gaja Raja has a sequence that he feels is his best attempt at humour.
Apart from Madha Gaja Raja, the Pongal holiday window would also see the release of Bala’s Vanangaan (Jan 10), Madraskaaran (Jan 10), Nesippaaya (Jan 14), and Kadhalikka Neramillai (Jan 14). There are a slew of releases in Telugu too for the Sankranthi weekend, which includes Game Changer (Jan 10), Daaku Maharaja (Jan 12), and Sankrantiki Vasthunaam (Jan 14).
