In a significant setback for Tamil actor Mansoor Ali Khan, the Madras High Court on Friday refused to grant him permission to file a defamation suit against actors Trisha Krishnan, Chiranjeevi and Khushbu Sundar, as reported by Bar and Bench. Khan has been facing the heat ever since he made offensive and misogynistic comments about his Leo co-star Trisha.

The High Court pointed out that Khan’s proposed defamation suit appeared to be a publicity stunt. Consequently, the court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the actor. Khan was directed to deposit the fine amount at the Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai.

Earlier this month, the High Court had rebuked Khan for initiating the defamation suit. When the matter came up on December 11, Justice N Sathish Kumar had observed that it was Trisha who should have approached the court, against Khan’s remarks about her. He added that the actor should know how to behave in public, especially when a lot of people see actors as role models, Live Law quoted Justice Sathish Kumar as saying.

The controversy began during a media interaction when Khan made misogynistic remarks about Trisha, expressing regret for not having a “bedroom scene” with her in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film Leo. He also mentioned his involvement in numerous “rape scenes” in the past.

Following this, Trisha herself, apart from Lokesh, Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi, singer Chinmayi Sripaada, film producer Archana Kalpathi, actor and NCW member Khushbu Sundar, director Karthik Subbaraj and actor Malavika Mohanan, slammed Khan for his statements.

Though he ‘apologised’ to Trisha later, the actor soon took a U-turn and moved the court to file a defamation suit against Trisha and others for their social media comments about him.

A case was registered against him under sections 354 A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of a complaint filed by the National Commission for Women at the Thousand Lights all-women police station in Chennai.
