Futuristic moves
Shooting of the foot-tapping club number Saturday Saturday in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was intercepted with moments of fun, where the team would often groove on international songs in between shots
Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt groove to Saturday Saturday
The much-anticipated Punjabi club number, Saturday Saturday, was given a futuristic touch with a magnificent set up. The song was shot in a massive, collosium-inspired set, complete with a huge dome, mirrors on all the sides and an army tank that introduces Varun Dhawan in the video. The makers left no stone unturned to ensure that the song looks perfect and as a result, they spent Rs. 3 crore on the video alone, making it the second most expensive song in the industry after Malang from Dhoom 3.
Break-ke-baad
Shooting the song was a process that choreographer Ahmed Khan enjoyed like never before. He recalls how after every ‘cut’ was announced, either he or director Shashank Khaitan would put on one English track and everyone, including lead actors Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, would immediately start grooving to the number, while singing it and having a ball. “The actors were young and hassle-free and so was producer Karan (Johar). Hence, it was work coupled with fun all the way. And it’s a rare thing that a technician gets to enjoy so much while choreographing a song,” smiles Khan, who shot the song over three nights at Mumbai’s Film City Studios.
Star track
The promotional video was one of the most expensive to put together, what with 200 dancers in the backdrop, extravagant props and some eye-popping costumes for the lead actors. “When Karan told me that he wanted to start the promotion of the film with Saturday Saturday, I knew I had to put in my best. My intention was to make Varun stand out, not only as a great dancer with some energetic steps, but I wanted him to dance like a star and so, the song was shot accordingly. That’s why in the video, you see Varun has the aura of a star around him.”
However, it was the 20-plus Bhatt with her petite form who stunned the choreographer with her moves. The choreographer was working with both the actors for the first time and was aware of Varun being a good dancer, but Alia was a surprise package for him. “I was so surprised when I saw her dancing for the first time. Alia’s strongest point is her face. It’s rare to find girls who can balance expressions and dance and still manage to look good. So, I gave her more of facial expressions. Otherwise, she’s a small girl, so when she moves, she’s quick and it looks sweet and soft,” said Khan.
Directed by debutant Shashank Khaitan, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and produced by Dharma Productions, the film releases on July 11.
