We need more multiplexes, single screen theatres: Karan Johar

Karan Johar says there is a need for more multiplexes and single screen theatres to come up in the country to extend the reach of films.

Filmmaker Karan Johar says there is a need for more multiplexes and single screen theatres to come up in the country to extend the reach of films.

The 43-year-old, who wears many hats- director, screenwriter, reality dance show judge- sought government support for the film industry.

“Holiday periods are blocked (for film releases) as it brings in more money. Earlier two-three films used to release at the same time…like ‘Dil’ and ‘Ghayal’ or ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Gaddar’ – all these films were successful,” Karan said today.

“We need more infrastructure…need more multiplexes.. single screen theatres. There is red tape…bureaucacy…we need government support. We need to control budget,” he said.

Karan Johar was talking to reporters at the song launch of ‘Bahubali’. The Bollywood filmmaker is presenting ace Telugu director S S Rajamouli’s magnum opus ‘Bahubali’ in Hindi.

Karan Johar said he is a huge fan of Rajamouli’s work and was happy to attach his name to the noted director’s film. “We don’t have a filmmaker like him (Rajamouli) here (in Bollywood) who can make films on such a huge canvas… putting 3-4 years of his life in one project,” he said.

“There are few filmmakers like him (Rajamouli) who will give three-four years for one film. We need such actors as well.”

The ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ director said he is open to present more south films in Hindi provided the content is good.

‘Babubali’, a war flick in Telugu starring Rana Dagubatti, Prantas, Anushka Shetty and Tamaannah Bhatia, is set to release on July 10.
