To ensure strict compliance with the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (MERC) laid down guidelines for new electricity connections—three days in metropolitan areas, seven days in urban areas, and fifteen days in rural areas—the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has introduced procedural reforms supported by information technology.
Commenced from January 1, this year, MSEDCL officials are confident that these measures will eliminate delays in providing new electricity connections.
MSEDCL provides electricity supply throughout Maharashtra, except for some parts of Mumbai. Power consumers can apply for new electricity connections online. Supporting documents can also be uploaded with the application. Then the customer is informed about the provisional estimate of the fee. Once the payment is received and MSEDCL officials verify the application and documents, a new meter is installed, and the electricity connection is provided, according to an official statement issued here.
This entire process, from application submission to the system recording the provision of the new connection, has now been made completely online. MSEDCL officials are confident that this will ensure electricity consumers receive new connections within the timeframes set by the Commission.
While the MERC has stipulated timelines of three days for metropolitan areas, seven days for urban areas and fifteen days for rural areas for new electricity connections, this applies only where basic infrastructure is already available. If infrastructure work, such as erecting poles and laying wires, is required to provide electricity supply, the Commission has set a timeframe of 90 days for providing the connection.
According to officials, these improvements made by the MSEDCL administration will bring greater speed and transparency to the process of providing new electricity connections.
“If there is any delay by MSEDCL officials and employees in providing new electricity connections, information technology will help identify the exact stage where the delay occurred. As a result, it has become possible to speed up the overall process,” an MSEDCL official said.
