According to the police, Maniyar arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok and was stopped during immigration clearance.
A 39-year-old man from Gujarat was intercepted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Sunday after his alleged involvement in a racket supplying bogus marksheets to youths aspiring to study abroad came to light.
The accused, identified as Prathamesh Shirishbhai Maniyar, a resident of Jamnagar, was detained by immigration officials after arriving from Bangkok and later handed over to the Sahar police, who arrested him on charges of cheating, forgery and other offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the police, Maniyar arrived in Mumbai from Bangkok and was stopped during immigration clearance. When questioned about his profession, he reportedly failed to give satisfactory answers, prompting further inquiry by immigration officials. During questioning, officials learnt that Maniyar was allegedly part of a racket involved in arranging college admissions and supplying fake educational certificates and marksheets to students, particularly those seeking to pursue higher education abroad.
Police said Maniyar is suspected to be the mastermind behind the racket and has allegedly been providing fake educational documents to students across the country for the past 10 years. As per the FIR, he promised admissions in colleges in Canada and the United States, but instead supplied forged degrees and marksheets to the aspirants.
Further interrogation revealed that Maniyar allegedly charged between Rs 50,000 and Rs 2 lakh for the fake documents and contacted students through a network of agents. The accused is said to have supplied forged certificates through agents operating in cities such as Jaipur, Bhopal, Ambala and several other locations.
During the examination of his mobile phones, officials reportedly found multiple forged documents stored in the gallery. These included marksheets, provisional certificates and degrees purportedly issued by the Gujarat board and universities such as Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, ISBM University, Mansarovar Global University, Arni University and Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. The FIR states that the bogus documents were prepared in the names of students.
