Vicky Kaushal has strong family values, courtesy his upbringing. The actor admits that he is emotionally stronger because, during their growing-up years, his father, the action director Sham Kaushal, never shied away from crying in front of him or his younger brother Sunny Kaushal. Even their mother never hid from them when their father cried after being humiliated on a film set.

In a new interview, Kaushal shared how his father has been an ‘atypical figure’ in the family. “He has tried to make us strong, emotionally. He would openly tell us, ‘I felt humiliated on set today and I came back and I cried to your mom.’ He would say that to us when we were children. And mom would tell us this, that one time this had happened, that had happened, and some senior had scolded him in front of the whole set when he was just a stuntman. And he came back home and cried. So, this was never hidden from us. And he has cried in front of us,” Kaushal shared with We Are Yuvaa.

But Sham Kaushal also made sure to make his sons strong individuals. He taught Sunny and Vicky how to “fight with things.” He told them, “Things are not going to go in your favour all the time. Most times they are going to be against you; that’s how life is.”

However, like most of the children, Sunny and Vicky were also scared of their father as kids and would always confide in their mother. “It was like mom was the good cop and he was the bad cop. Now he is really cool and chill. but back then, it was like we were very afraid to open up in front of dad. We would always be open in front of mom,” Vicky Kaushal shared.

Vicky Kaushal’s family ritual

The Udham Singh star always wonders why people say it is tough to say “I love you” to your father because he says it to his parents every day. Also, the actor revealed a family ritual. “We have this ritual where the first thing I do is touch their feet. And dad has like a, and it’s a fun thing because he says that to now Katrina as well because she is the daughter they never had, he has this rap song, and I keep making fun of it.”

He added, “But that’s the first Punjabi rap I ever heard because he goes like, (blessings in Punjabi) ‘jeende raho jawani amaano, bibe puttar, mere paari puttar, mere sone puttar, mere bibe puttar…rab akala deve buddhiyan deve’. It is so now deeply ingrained ki I would pickup the phone and say ‘Pariponna papa’ and he will be half asleep saying ‘jeende raho…’ The first 2 minutes I am just silent because this rap is coming, blessings of rap.”
