Pune City Police have launched a probe into the firearm licence issued to Ajay Saravade, a member of the gang led by international fugitive gangster Nilesh Ghaywal. Investigators believe Saravade used this licence to procure around 400 rounds of ammunition from the Ammunition Factory outlet in Khadki (AFK).
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sambhaji Kadam said, “During the probe we received information that Chaudhari and Saravade were in Ganagapura area of Karnataka. The two were arrested by a team from Pune police a couple of days ago. Subsequent to that a search was conducted at Saravade’s house in Kothrud on Tuesday where we recovered a total of 400 rounds — 200 of them used and 200 live. Probe has revealed that of the 200 casings that we have recovered, 150 were given by Saravade to Ghaywal for firing practice which was done at Ghaywal’s village in Ahilyanagar district earlier this year.”
DCP Kadam added, “Our probe further revealed that Saravade, who is a history sheeter, procured a firearm license by using a fake address. He then used this fraudulently obtained firearm license to purchase the said ammunition from the outlet of the Ammunition Factory Khadki. A separate FIR is being registered against Saravade in connection to this firearm license and that entire process of issuing the license to him is being investigated.”

Gangster Ghaywal, who is currently believed to be in the United Kingdom, is alleged to have fled the country earlier this year using a fraudulently obtained passport. According to police investigation, Ghaywal applied for a tatkal passport at the regional passport office in Pune in 2019, mentioning that he was a resident of ‘Gauri Ghumat, Anandi Bazar, Maliwada Road, Ahmednagar (now renamed Ahilyanagar)’ and changing the spelling of his name to Gaiwal. Failing to locate him at this address, the Ahilyanagar police entered a “not available” remark on his application which was forwarded to the passport office in Pune on January 16, 2020. In spite of this, a passport was issued to Ghaywal, using which he left India and travelled to the UK on a visitor visa.
The British High Commission responding to a Pune police’s letter, confirmed in October Ghaywal’s location in the UK and that they have contacted the concerned authorities in the UK for his detention and deportation. The Pune Police have also written to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding Ghaywal’s benami properties and suspected money laundering through multiple firms, bank accounts, as well as land acquired at undervalued rates in alleged land-grabbing cases. The Pune Police have also sought Ghaywal’s prosecution under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
